I just received an email for an opening as a school principal at Downtown Miami Charter School (305 NW 3rd Avenue · Miami, Florida 33128), which is run by Charter Schools USA. I would love to know:

1) If anyone knows anything about the school/neighborhood
2) If anyone has heard of Charter Schools USA
3) If my wife and I decided to move to South Florida, where we could find a decent neighborhood

I'm not looking for someone to tell me how bad South Florida is, because I've already seen lots of opinions on this board (and I plan to do my own research before deciding whether a move from NJ is worth it). I'm also not concerned about the neighborhood I work in, as I've worked in West Philly and Camden, NJ - just whether there is a good neighborhood to live in.
I'd appreciate any help, especially as it relates to the charter school company, Charter School USA. Thank you!

That area is in downtown, I wouldn't live there. You could probably find a condo to rent for year in the Brickell area, which isn't to far from that address you gave. Never heard of that company. I always thought Charter Schools were part of the Public School System.

Charter Schools are public schools open to any student that are run by independent organizations. Most are non-profit organizations, and some are affiliated with local universities; some are for-profit groups (they rarely make any money, though). Depending on the rules in each state, they may report directly to the state or may have to report to a county/district. They must also reach passing scores on state tests just like regular schools.
The beauty of charter schools is that they are much more independent, and thus free of the bureaucracy that is so prevalent in a normal district. However, independence has its price; some charter schools are run by people or organizations that care more for themselves than for the students they serve.
That's why I try to get to know about a charter school company/organization before trying to apply - you can land a job with a school that has great potential, or with one that spends its money patronizing friends of the company.

As far as living, I'd prefer not to live in the city. I love working with city kids, but living there is a different story. I wouldn't mind commuting up to 45 min, either.
What about Cutler Bay? I saw these apartments.
Thanks again!

Cutler Bay is ok, not great by any means. I personally would never live there. But there are other posters that don't see it that bad. You need to plan a trip down and take a look for your own eyes. It used to be called Cutler Ridge before they incorporated recently. So they are fixing things up around there now that they control more of their money.
