Safe/affordable areas to live in Miami?
i'm from Jersey and in less than a year i will be moving to Miami with my girlfirend. i am going to go to FIU and she is planning to go to Miami-Dade College. We are looking for an affordable 1 bedroom apartment no more than $1000. We are looking more around $900 but $1000 will be our max. I was thinking around Kendall or Dadeland. Ive read that there are some really bad areas in Miami and i dont want to leave a relativley safe area here in North Bergen, NJ (across the Huson River, NYC) to live in the slums or ghetto in Miami.
a lot of people tell me i wont find anything of that price range in a safe area in Miami....is this true?

Which Miami-Dade College campus? That's going to make all the difference. 1k is plenty for a 1 bedroom, and 900 should also get you something. You will find plenty in safe areas.

fontainebleau is an ugly area but relatively safe. There is also trashy Sweetwater right next to FIU. Plenty of low-end but overpriced apartments near Mami Dade kendall campus but avoid the Richmond Heights area as it is the ghetto at any of its apartment buildings. COnsidering the sad state of the economy after the September-October crash there should be a lot of affordable rents in 2010 as the inflation rate soars and the economy crumbles.

OP Sweetwater is not trashy. The bad areas of Miami are most with a NW right next to it, with some exceptions(Miami lakes, Doral, Miami Springs, Miami Shores) and most SW areas are good areas, middle/lower middle class with some big exceptions too(Anything above SW 184 st) Some parts of South Miami, Grove, Perrine & Richmond heigths. There's plenty to choose from, don't let some of these posters scare you, all they recommend is 700k homes in Pinecrest.

Pinecrest does not have apartment buildings. Pinecrest It's a very expensive community. The closest will be in Dadeland which is safe too. Do stay away from those places you mentioned. Consider Kendall, Dadeland, affordable parts of Coral Gables. Be picky in places like sweetwater & westchester, but don't disregard them. Some apartment buildings are crap even when they are located in nice areas. It depends on their management. It's better to stay on the west side of the city if you are gonna attend the Miami Dade south campus in Kendall.

There are a few apartment complexes in Pinecrest off of 88th street (Kendall Drive) east of US1 and just north of 104th just off of US1 are some new places. There are also a few duplexes behind Sunnyland Mall. I don't know what the rent in these places are. Try Kendall, I don't know what the rent is going for (my sister rents out her place for 1400, but its really nice and the community is nice too). Kendall has plenty of apartment complexes, there should be something under $1000 even if you have to look in West Kendall.

I just saw some apartments being advertised across from International Mall, 1-bedrooms starting at $799. Kind of a funky-looking building, interesting architecture. I don't think that's a bad area, and down the street a few miles from FIU. That's also close to MDC's new West Campus.
