Default How Far North Does Kendall Go?

I have always wondered to myself what the northern boundary of Kendall is. Kendall is certainly bordered by Westchester to its north, so the issue is where does Westchest stop and Kendall start?

I attend Southwest High School and I lived off of Coral Way. I lived in Westchester, but by the time I got down to SW 48 St. where the school was, it felt more like Kendall. The homes were bigger, the landscaping was nicer and it was less of a recent immigrant feel. Bird Road always felt like Westchester though...and Miller Drive felt like a quiet version of Kendall.

So, where do you all think Kendall ends and Westchester begins? My vote is for SW 48 St as an approximate dividing line, even though it is probably more of a transition zone between Bird Rd. and Miller Dr.

I personally think its some where between Sunset and Miller, so between 56th St and 72 St Kendall Ends. The census I think has it between sunset and Kendall and doesn't include western Kendall (everything west of 117Ave I believe) as part of Kendall, they are another section of the census I think they call it West Kendall.

I remember years ago when one of the local community newspaper had an article on kendall or west kendall and it had an unofficial map of west kendall and it went something like this:

* A line that started on 117 avenue and bird rd.
* Line went straight down south on 117 ave until somewhere around miller or sunset where the line curved to the east and put the eastern part of west kendall around 107th or 102nd and sunset.
*I believe the line continued south on 102 or 107 until 104 st or maybe a little south, and west until krome Avenue (177 ave).

So basically it started on bird rd on the north and 117th and went west to krome going east and west. Going north and south it starts on 117th on the north but the unofficial line bends to the east as you go down on the map to about 107 ave or 102 avenue.

Again, I've seen and heard different maps and different boundaries but this one map is the one that sticks out to me as it had an interesting article about the area.

That's about right, somewhere close to Miller Drive. Westchester is a weird place anyway, some areas are pretty decent Moderator cut: English Only

Westchester was a nice middle-class suburb with a heavily Jewish population. Once the residents moved or passed away the new owners cut down all trees and started putting up burglar bars, iron fences and paved over lawns to add more parking for families or illegal tenants. Now Westchester is like Hialeah south in many areas.

The whole "Kendall" concept is not set in stone. Generally anything southwest of Bird/107 has been called Kendall in recent years.

That's true....but talking about Westchester's eastern boundary now, I used to work at the BK on Coral Way and 74Ave when I was in High School, and I remember my coworkers who lived on THAT side of the Palmetto considered their area "Westchester" and to me Westchester was always the west side of the Palmetto, so I guess the boundary is fluid, especially in unicorporated Miami Dade County. The northern boundary is hard to define as well, but the subdivisions and main heart of Westchester to me will always be SW 8 St to the north, Bird Rd. to the south, the Palmetto to the east and 107 to the west.

Even though I went to Southwest, I graduated from Coral Park and what Tallrick said is true. All of the pictures of the prom queens that were on the wall were Jewish girls until the 70s when all of a sudden there were Cuban girls. Unfortunately, I never got to know the tree filled Westchester, I guess between new residents and hurricanes I have never seen that area with large trees, although I suppose the way Miller Dr. is now, is how Coral Way trough Westchester *might* have been 40 years ago...

Chelito, I too have always thought or considered Westchester to be west of the palmetto. In fact, east of the palmetto on 8st or coral way seems more like West Miami area. What you think or thought of what the northern boundaries and eastern and western boundaries of Westchester sounds more or less accurate to me.

I remember in the late 70s and early 80s when Westchester was considered a highly preferred area in Miami Dade to live in. Just like West Kendall was in the 80s. Both areas have changed considerably; and not for the better.

Chelito, I believe that area is also considered Westchester. I know what BK you are talking about, they used to have a lot of specials (2 for 1 back in the late 90's). The Westchester Hospital is right there, East of Palmetto, so maybe that has something to do with the fact that they call that area also Westchester.

Oh God I remember those annoying specials cheapos would flock to the BK from miles around for them!! I worked there in like 98 so maybe I waited on you LOL. The owner of that BK also had one on SW 8 St by that mobile home park...

Yeah, the Westchester hospital is tight there and it is literally within a stone's throw from what I considerer Westchester so it does make sense...but I did get the West Miami vibe more...kind of like transitioning out of Coral Gables into the real Dade County.

I always was so annyoed that the continuation of Coral's Way's beauty had to end in Coral Gables and suddenly the median in this area was filled with random palmetto palms and dwarf trash trees. What a shame, the other end in Miami has the giant Banyans, my favorite tree in deed!
