Spanish classes in Miami (Coral Gables, Coconut Grove)
I've lived in Miami for some months now and I want to start taking some Spanish classes during daytime. Either normal classes or in college. I am 40 years old and need to do it between 9 am and 1.30 pm (when my son is in school) one or two times a week.
Where to go? I live in Coconut Grove.

For conversationial Spanish practice Sedano's supermaket.
Seriously though, you could try Miami Dade in Downtown. Also I recommend Rosetta Stone courses. Sometimes you can buy those cheaper, but I can't discuss that here. I used the one for German, and I still can remember the phrases I learned. When I went to school they were going too fast and I didn't learn anything, some of the students were ahead of me so it made it really difficult. If you are really interested in learning a new language, my recommendation is to watch TV, Read(things that interest you though, otherwise you will get bored) in that language. Even if you think you are not understanding anything, your brain is learning. The hardest part is always understanding it spoken, so you need to train your ear.

Miami-Dade has language classes for the community. You should get a course list in the mail before every semester that tells you where and when the classes are, otherwise look online at their site.

You have something there about hanging around a supermarket or any setting where the language is being spoken it is the best way to learn, but obviously you would want to take some lessons in Spanish first to pick up the vocabulary.

Rosetta Stone works great, I used it for my Chinese and Portuguese. You can actually download it for free on torrentz.com , someone told me about that but i didn't try it. If you use that, and a grammar book you can just go anywhere in Dade county to really practice. its great .. as effective as being in a different country.

Definitely suggest getting a dictionary. Then get a book, newspaper, whatever written and look up each word. Write it down. Writing helps your brain assimilate more because you have to make a slower, conscious effort and must repeat.
Watch Spanish TV (as awful as it is) and listen to Spanish radio. Get tapes. Rent language videos. Learn the hand motions that go with words (especially from some nationalities). Make friends with people who do not speak English so that you are forced to learn. Hopefully the "friends" part will be real and they won't get totally annoyed and burnt out.
Also, join your formal, organized class for how ever many times a week you can get away.
It's not going to happen overnight and at age 40, well...it is a known fact that it will be much harder the older the person is but, if you can basically forget English and that you have the ability to use it at will, you should pick up enough to get by in less than 6 months.

Thank you. I lived in Italy for three years, but it is 30 years ago. I still remember much so I hope that I will have help of my Italian when learning Spanish.
Where should I go if I would like to graduate?
I prefer to go to a school/class and meet others.

The italian should help you a lot. I still suggest Miami Dade College.

UM has intensive language classes, but the price is also pretty intensive.

I would check out the Miami Dad college. Also, I think some high schools (at least Palmetto) offers adult ed classes at night. Maybe you can look into that too. (thats my first option before MDC)
