It is approximately 15 miles from South Beach to University of Miami and it will take you depending on what time of the day about 30 minutes at least.

Live in South Miami and party in South Beach - at least for the first year. You can rent a place on the beach for the summers if you like. South Miami has its own vibe going on and is very active with all the students there.

Is this post graduate or under grad? If it is undergrad you will want to live on campus living off campus your first year would be a HUGE mistake.

Post grad live by the University. Traffic can get very bad during rush hour if you have a 5:30pm class it will take you 45min to get down there. Live by the school and you can always party up in Sobe. Why would youn want to commute like that. 15miles is pretty far for Miami.
