Next door neighbors moved to North Carolina. Neighbors behind me have a son moving to Texas also. The exodus continues, but now it isn't merely due to excessive housing prices, it is because *gasp* it isn't like this everywhere, there are places where jobs actually pay a living wage, even during the recessing and economic crisis. I think people know that even when the economy picks up nationwide, Miami will just see a return of more minimum wage service jobs and underpaid professional jobs too. This trend will continue until Florida reinvents itself and diversifies its economy from tourism and real estate speculation.

People with sense have been doing what your friends are doing for quite some time. I know a few with the intention of moving, but are waiting for things to stabilize. I go back and forth to GA (wife is already settled). I am hoping to leave this paradiso...
I have a friend that moved to Atlanta 2 years ago, but is working to move back down to Miami. She's cuban and wants her Miami back!! She's a cool lady, but no one in Atlanta will miss her (she's miserable there).
(She's not the only south Floridian hispanic/Cuban that I know, or heard of, that hasn't adapted well in GA or NC. I know of a few examples that are looking to come back south). As there are some leaving, a few are coming back to their Miami....

Really wide, stretch it and feel like you've been duped. Words of wisdom...

I'd say it's better than South Florida in many ways. I hope they iron out some issues up there. I can see Orlando prospering post recession better than South Florida. (I also read an article recently stating just that).

South Florida...I only see stagnation on many fronts. There will be more of the same thing. Many like it the way it is, and don't care to change anything. Que sera, sera...
It is up to those who want to and can leave, to make their move.

I left Miami 2 years ago and have never looked back. Moving there was one of those things that seemed to be a good idea at the time, but that turned out to be a mistake. I was expecting a certain degree of superficiality and non-English speaking, but nothing prepared me for the sheer hell that me and my family went through.
Glad to be out!

You represent the majority of families who move to Miami expecting harmonious tropical diversity but instead are overpowered by Hispanicness.
I am sorry it didn't work for you, maybe our kids will enjoy a Miami.

Tallrick: what do you think about raising a family in the Tavernier/Plantation Key/Islamorada area? It has okay shopping and good schools, but living there would be a terrible commute up to most jobs on the mainland.
