I was trying to avoid that because it's quite difficult to explain...Plus, it doesn't involve Chucky, the dude from Saw, or any Hollywood type ghosts.
Back then the Biltmore, if memory serves me correctly, was either quite empty, or abandoned. A few friends and I decided to explore different areas. My friend and I went to an area that looked like a lobby but it wasn't the front desk or anything. If you can imagine a bar with no liquor, then you have an idea of what this room looked like. A young lady was dressed in period costume (let's say 30's), she looked up, smiled, and said nothing. Mind you, there was no door behind her or any type of exit, just the entrance that WE had come in through. There was also a strange feeling permeating the area; the smells, the extreme silence; even the temperature felt different in that room. It was so strange to see someone just standing there, doing nothing really. All of a sudden, we heard a noise, a bell or something, looked back because the noise startled us. When we turned around to acknowledge the lady and perhaps ask a few questions, she was gone. It wasn't very strange at first, but when we though about it, there was NO DOOR. So my friend and I basically though we saw something. Needless to say we hauled butt out of there. When we found our friends, who were equally startled by their own experiences, we wanted to show them the room where we saw our "vision" but the room was nowhere to be found.
It could have been a folie a deux or a figment of our imagination due to excitement, but then again we saw the same exact thing. It has "haunted' me for years.

Thanks for sharing, Gymbuff. WOW. You got to experience the paranormal, so I guess it's worth the scare, right? But it's still very intriguing, too bad you can't go there to check anymore now that Biltmore is not abandoned.

I sneaked in the Biltmore many times in the late 70's-early 80's. Day and night and my friends and I never saw anything "paranormal". We spent more time pushing each other around on carts, and throwing rocks at rats and foxes. Many abandoned buildings were our playhouses, and I even have a few souvenirs from the debris laying around. I did visit the Biltmore for a convention a few years back and found the concrete decoration we had chipped when a cart went awry. The chip is still there.

One place rumored to be haunted was the cemetery of the old Dade County Hospital (now indian hammocks park). I had friends who swore they saw people walking around at night in the cemetery and around the woods. The cemetery is still there, near the park department offices.
