We moved to California from Fort Myers in 2002 to take care of aging family members and here's what we miss:

- The wonderful winter climate: Shorts, a tropical shirt, and flip-flops in January are the uniform of the day and you can go into most restaurants looking like you just came off the beach (which we did) and it's no problem!

- Incredible boating: If you have access onto the Caloosahatchee you can go upriver for fresh-water waterskiing, wakeboarding, or manatee-watching. If you want to go even further you can take your boat all the way to Miami and from there the entire East coast and beyond. If you go downriver you have access to the Gulf of Mexico and many local beaches that can only be accessed by boat - bring a picnic, spend the day, and be home before dark. If you are into fishing there is something for everybody - tarpon in the Gulf, flyfishing for redfish in the flats, bass everywhere.

- Good golfing: Good public courses at reasonable prices (watch out for the alligators in the water hazards!) with extra-low pricing in the afternoons and off-season. Really nice courses at the numerous private clubs (join a cheaper one and get reciprocal privileges at the more expensive ones).

- Discounts at Disney World: They have special "Florida resident" season passes.

- No state income tax: It's like getting an automatic raise, if you're retired or self-employed.

- Tourists: Really. It's interesting to chat with people with a different point of view, and MOST of them are nice.

- Lower cost of living: Aside from housing costs, things are less expensive, at least compared to California.

It's not ALL sweetness and light (see numerous other threads for that), but overall it's great and it's easy to see why it's one of the fastest-growing areas in the country...

Have a great day and enjoy wherever you're at!

For sure...I ignore the negative posters though. This is just a place where the majority of people here are disgruntled and unhappy in general.

I've already partaken in numerous posts citing the reasons I love it here. It was a good idea to post this thread!

WHAT? Warm weather year round - I think NOT. ONLY HAWAII AND PUERTO RICO WOULD HAVE THAT Is that why Miami has been 37 degrees many winters in a roq? Is that why Miami will get 40-45 every single winter for about 10-20 days Is that why Miami OFFICLIALLY FREEZES every 7 years or so?

See here people : w w w . w u n d e r g r o u n d . c o m for a day by day record of temps
