Hi, I am 18 and will be starting college here in PA. I really hate this area simply because you are limited to what you can do. Im going to attend a community college here for 2 years majoring in Mathematics. Then I plan to transfer my credits to a college in Miami that has a Mathematics course OR actuarial science course as I want to be an Actuary. This brings my first question. Does anyone know of a four year institution that is fairly priced in the area? I would like to go to the university of Miami but it is very expensive. If I have to make the sacrifice of going into more debt to pursue my dream I will, but I would like to know if there are any alternative schools with relatively cheap prices with my major. I also wouldn't mind going to school in the Hollywood/Ft. Lauderdale area either but I would prefer Miami. I here a lot about crime in Miami but how is it on South Beach? I was checking out apartments in the beach area and it seems like it's going to run me about 1300-1500 for a 1 br w/patio which is what I want AFTER I GRADUATE COLLEGE. I really would love waking up to the beach every morning and being able to go to it on the spot. I don't like to party but I still want a night life. Does anyone have advice for me? Any help is appreciated, thanks!

UM is a very good university but very expensive. I went to FIU and it is a very good university. There are two campus' one near west Miami (8th street and 107th ave) and the other in broward county near Aventura. I went to both campus; the other university is Nova Southeastern University which is also located in broward county. You can probabally find an apartment/condo near or on the beach in Hallendale which is very close to both FIU and Nova University(in broward)

There is also Miami Dade Community College which I also attended for my first two years and I loved it. THis was many years ago, but I heard the they are offering four year degrees. Not sure which ones. There are two locations one in kendall and the other in broward county. The one in Kendall is a much better area, in my opinion. Yes, there is crime but you just need to watch out what areas you choose and be very careful.. I have been living in Miami my whole life and I have never had any issues with crime. I have always lived in good areas though. I do want to live elsewhere and currently doing a log of research because I am not sure where since I have a family to watch out for. I have been checking out TN and NC. Good luck !!!!

Miami Dade College has campuses all over now...they offer 4 year degrees in nursing and some other programs as well (education, I think).

OP - There are a few universities down here, but you will being paying out of state tuition costs. Why not just stay up north for two extra years and save yourself lots of money not paying for those out of state tuition costs.
