Miami-Dade County Home To Four Top High SchoolS
MIAMI -- Coral Reef Senior High School celebrated Wednesday after being named one of the top high schools in the nation. And school officials said the news is spreading quickly thanks to Newsweek Magazine.
"This school is special because we take kids from all over," an administrator at the school said. "It's a lottery based and the only requirements to get in here are performance."
With that in mind, students who attend Coral Reef High know they have not only a rare opportunity, but also a duty, to live up to the expectations educators have for those who come here to learn.
"They set a standard for us and we meet it," Ashley Carbonell, a student at the school, said. "We work so hard and it's preparing us for the future."
Coral Reef High students said they know they are a cut above the rest, based not only on the Newsweek rankings, but also because of how many fellow students enroll in advanced placement classes and how many are college-bound.
"It's a great school to go to," student Jack Carter said. "It enhances your chances of going to college and pursuing your career. There are so many different programs here."
Coral Reef is one of four Miami-Dade County schools to make the Newsweek list, coming in at No. 20.
Mast Academy ranked 68, Miami Palmetto Senior High ranked 79, and Coral Gables Senior High was No. 128.
No Broward County schools made the top 100, but Nova High in Davie ranked 226.
"The curriculum is the most challenging, but it's gratifying," student Omar Quezada said. "You know if you meet the standards here, you are ready to go on to a higher level."
