My point was that, were I to live in an affluent area such as Boca Raton, I wouldn't expect to see this type of house every day, either.

But, in north Dade, the burglar-barred cracker box house with no foliage is standard fare.

I agree. I lived in Dade County most of my life, just recently moved to Broward. I grew up in West Miami which is (was) a safe middle class neighborhood, and we had bars on our windows in our house.

And I dont mean to bash on you or anyone, but:

Yes , there are very ugly areas of Miami with ugly little houses with concrete paved over the yard and burglar bars ... but I question where the hell many of the posters here live that they see that crap every day ?

I live in Boca and have family in Weston and Coral Springs and I never , ever see those nasty little houses as I choose to stay out of Overtown , Carol City , Miami Gardens and Hialeah .
I dont choose to go into some of these neighborhoods, I have to. I work in Hialeah, and I see these types of houses every single day. And I see the trailer parks in Medley as well. And have family that live in Hialeah with bars on their windows. Not so much because they choose it, but because thats what they can afford and thats what most working middle class families can afford.

We cant all live and play in Boca and Weston.

And traveler guy, trust what people tell you about staying out of Overtown, Opa Locka, and etc whether you look at a crime map or not.

opa locka was at one point in time higher in crime than st. louis and regularly has a higher murder per capita rate than even detroit.

Opa locka this past year 2007 has a murder rate of 68 murders per 100,000 I would say thats worse then st Louis.

If you go to central Palm Beach County and even in West Palm Beach you'll see homes like this. The homes near where I live look like this.

I did post some nice photos of real South Florida "hoods" though ;-)

Well, the majority of homes in Kendall, Miami Lakes, South Miami, Coral Gables, Miami Beach, Miramar, Delray Beach, Pembroke Pines, Cooper City, Hallandale Beach, North Lauderdale, Coral Springs, Sunrise, Plantation, Tamarac, Coconut Creek, Parkland, Deerfield Beach, Aventura, Hollywood, Lauderhill, Pompano Beach and Fort Lauderdale don't have burglar bars on them. So, in essence, most of Broward County, most of south Palm Beach County, and pretty large areas of Dade do not have the burglar bar curse.

So basically, you have Miami Gardens, the city of Miami, Sweetwater, West Palm Beach, Miami Shores (borders on bad neighborhoods?), east Boynton Beach, Riviera Beach, Lake Worth, Hialeah, North Miami, North Miami Beach, and parts of South Dade as burglar bar land. Believe it or not they have burglar bars on homes in about proportionally the same size chunk of most major metropolitan areas, including much smaller metros.

I have actual seen burglar bars here on very nice properties here. Though I have heard that they are sometimes used as a Hispanic cultural thing, or if the homes are on side roads rather than in communities (which are more dangerous).

Miami is just friggin GROSS! I got the hell out of SFL after 25 years. Just go to South America or Puerto Rico, same crap, nothing but illegal aliens, english has become the 2nd language, and it really has nothing to offer, well maybe if your real young and enjoy a cultural living it does. After Andrew, 1/2 of Miami moved to Pembroke Pines and now migrating even further north. I visited for the holidays and could not believe how many signs in North Broward are now in English ans Spanish, or should I say Spanish then English. Disgusting!

Are the bars really needed on the houses?

Around here I've only seen them on buisnesses, never a house.
