Hey folks,

My girlfriend and I are considering moving to the Homestead area after a recent job offer I recieved. Although it seems nice and safe enough, a few co-workers of mine who have lived there say its infested with crime. I would really want a safe place to live and I wouldn't mind traveling up to an hour to get to work (around homestead). Also if anyone has any recomendations for nice appartments, around 1000-1500 month price range, that would be great too.

You could live anywhere in Miami and commute to Homestead. You would be commuting against the grain of traffic, so it shouldn't be too bad. I would avoid Homestead. Instead I would look in Kendall. Look around the Dadeland area. There are some nice new condo buildings where the rent would probably be below 1500 for a 1BR. You can also live in Coral Gables which is very nice. Or Brickell which is downtown where all of the nice new condos are. But you will need to spend closer to 1500 than 1000.

I just moved there. You have to be REAL picky about locations but there are some great deals. So far I like it but not the drive to Miami and Ft Lauderdale so much.

I've posted lots about Homestead - I've lived in the area since 1978. Look at the listing of "similar threads" below and you will find more posts and info about the area. I love it down here. Why deal with horrible Kendall or Miami traffic??????

Homestead is the most affordable non-ghetto "suburb " of Miami...

It doesn't get any better, for land lots, rents, home prices...

If you do end up living in Kendall, Coral Gables or other parts of Miami and commuting to Homestead, I highly encourage you to live relatively close to the Turnpike, preferably east of it and west of the Palmetto for the least offensive commute. My father worked in Homestead for many years until he retired a year ago, and he commuted from East Kendall. The Turnpike is the way to get down there with the least amount of headache, since US-1 is your only other alternative and that really should not be considered an alternative at all unless you are a masochist . If you live east of the Turnpike and west of the Palmetto, you will generally be traveling opposite of everyone else who is heading to work in Miami. However, if you live west of the Turnpike, everyone for the most part will be traveling east in the morning to get to wherever they work and west in the evening. These areas are known to suffer from a lot of congestion, and if you don't like sitting in traffic you'll be singing "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now" in no time.

You will definitely want to invest in a Sunpass as well.
