Default Places we love in Miami/surrounding areas

How about we start a thread which mentions the great places we love in Miami and surrounding areas. Maybe we can learn from each other's experiences and find some new fun things to do! Here are just a few things I can think of off the top of my head:

Norman Brothers- The BEST salsa, great shakes, great farmer's market.

Pinecrest Gardens- Best free park, complete with fun water sprinklers fro the kids, a butterfly garden, and a petting zoo.

The Falls- Love this mall...beautiful, with my favorite stores.

Lion Country Safari- We like this better than Metro Zoo. It has a safari and a little zoo too.

Sanibel- Best quick getaway. Only 2 1/2 hours away! Rent a condo and stay for a week...very relaxing!

Mall on Kendall and 123rd (name?)- Best new mall in West Kendall. Has Bahama Breeze, South of the Border, Gap, Old Navy, Pier I, Ann Taylor, etc. with art by Romero Britto...and even a Nova University.

What else??

I would even say if you want a nice quiet "getaway", spend a weekend in Boca Raton. Stay at the BR resort, dine at Mizner and Royal Palm Plaza. Live like a king for the weekend.

Shell Lumber on 27th ave near US1. Never go to home depot if you can go to Shell Lumber instead. In addition to friendly and knowledgeable sales people they also always have free popcorn that you scoop yourself out of the machine and in summer they give out sno-cones for the kids.

Does anyone know where to get good pizza (non chain)?

And Moby...is Shell Lumber just lumber or is it a hardware store like Home Depot. It sounds interesting.

Shell lumber is still open? I remember that place as a kid, they sell all kinds of moldings, and even stocked maple for bowling lanes! If I remember correctly, they also have a hardware section, but none of the accessories and electronics you find at the big box stores. Since there is no Home Depot near me, I used to go to Scotty's, which was also in Homestead, not sure if they still exist. KLI is the place I go to for hardware now, and they have all the stainless steel and galvanized hardware I need. Home Depot never has what I need, and if they do now-they will not the next time I visit.

Often the hardware stores are cheaper than Home Depot as well! Give the little stores a chance.

Wall's Ice Cream in South Miami is also pretty good.

Stay in South Miami for some great pizza at Miami's Best or The Big Cheese. You can also find some good pizza at College Park Inn across Killian Parkway from MDCC-Kendall Campus. Ciro's has good pizza and Italian food in the shopping center across from the Falls.

While we're talking about food, the restaurants I miss the most since I've moved are Shibui for Japanese and delicious sushi off of Sunset Dr and Randazzo's Little Italy in the Gables.

While I would never move back to Miami if someone paid me to, I did enjoy driving through the Gables and down Old Cutler Road on a late afternoon with no traffic. It's like being in another world.

The Knauz farm in the Redlands is wonderful for fresh produce and baked goods, especially their sticky buns! They also make some wicked mango shakes. You can also get some great shakes and fresh produce at Robert Is Here.

Pizza Kitchen in Pinecrest is close to NY style pizza. Ana Capri for Italian in Pinecrest. Cafe Abbracci in the Gables is also good. Red Fish Grill for seafood in Matheson Hammock Park.

The Big Cheese (The Big Sleeze as many of us call it) I literally got sick after I ate the pizza there (which I was excited to eat as I had heard so many good things). Then a day later after feeling better I thought it might of not been the pizza so I ate the last slice I had left and got sick again. It was the pizza. So we have never been back to that place.
