Getz's is a U.P. landmark for over 100 years. People come from all over to put clothes on their backs. Actually Getz's does more online than in the store. They are the worlds largest retailer of Carharrt clothing.

If you don't like cheap shopping and goods you can always move to Alaska next to Palin and have to drive to mom and pop stores that charge 3xs as much as a walmart. I bet if you ask 90% of the people in Marquett shop at wallyworld and love the cheap prices compared to mom mablys store. I would rather put the 3000 dollars I save into a retirement fund than give it to anyone else. But hey if you want to live in anti walmart country move to Charlivoux they kept out walmart, but the riches there now drive the 18 miles to the Ptown walmart and just get to say they don't have a wal mart keeping property prices down. LOL What ever.

I'm not saying this is a Marquette deal-breaker for us, but it was disappointing to see, and is reason to question the direction of growth for this region. As I said, if this type of growth is considered to be positive for the region.... so be it. It just might not be right for us.

On a side note: the impact Walmart has on local businesses and on suppliers is certainly debatable. Many would disagree with your assumption that businesses are doing something wrong if they can't compete with Walmart. Unless it's wrong to not be gi-normous and able to manipulate suppliers.

As far as the college....someone told us there were changes in housing requirements, tuition hikes, etc. which could impact enrollment. There may be NOTHING to what these people told us, but we wanted to look into it. It all has to do with the fear of buying into an area right before property values take a dive. These are the same people who told us prison jobs in the region were being cut. (We happened to run into a couple who was also searching the UP for a retirement location, and we compared notes.)
Maybe you can get ahold of MRpeebody sherman and go back to 50s Mayberry and Aunt Bee can make you some of her great corn bread muffins. LMFAO rubes.

Our retirement place is about an hour's drive from Marquette. Hopefully the sprawl won't get that far in 8 years! But I for one am glad to know I will be able to go to those big-box stores if I choose to occasionally.

I wouldn't rule out the area because of a Wal-Mart on 41. You don't have to go very far from there to find the small town atmoshphere is sounds like you are searching for.

Best of luck to you, I hope you find your dream, just a we have.
Martha
I thought Marquett was doing so well? other posts said it had great home sales and building was brisk? WTF now it needs jobs? Talk about bipolar. You want to keep a town like it was when you were a kid? are you serious? You remind me of the idiots from down state in the 90s they would move to north MI where I was born and raised and lived for 40 years and wanted to close off I75 the day after they moved there and start to change everything. I would tell them you screwed up your neck of the woods now want to FU ours. If you don't like it here get your arse back to detorit fool.

Spell check.

That way you don't look like uneducated on top of your other problems.

The thing about Marquette, and the U.P. in general, is its not really Michigan as most know it. Our economy is influenced by a delicate balance of jobs, large land area and very few people. We are too disconnected from other areas to be directly influenced by them. Northern WI. and North Lower Mi. share some of the same, but still , we are a different world up here. Most people are here cause they want to be here, not because of jobs or family. ( unless you were born here). There was a time when things were different, long ago with the mining booms, and most recent, the AFB which closed in 97 taking 10,000 jobs with it.
We share a mind set, and a way of life, mostly with the other Northern tier places, N. Mn. N. On. , ND. and N. WI. When something new comes to town...its a big deal, the nightly news just reported on the " Buffalo Wings" restaurant that opened on 41, and the bikers rally this week-end. Small town talk, yet its news when you live in the northland. The few petty crimes we have make big headlines, and the newspaper reports on what ships are in port loading and unloading.....
because of things being limited, growth being measured on a small scale, is one of the reasons house values have not gone done all that much, and why apt. rents remain high, even when there is a temporary over build..... Don't come here expecting to change things, and don't come here thinking we are emerging into an urban jungle-sprawl just because a new box store opens on Us 41. Things are changing in Marquette, it IS growing and there IS more traffic than ever, but, the remoteness, sooner or later always comes along to temper what may seem for a moment like a huge happening, its all about perspective.
