OK a big open question for those who live near St.Joseph and South Haven, how warm is the water this year and I want to hear from people and now a flow chart! LoL! It seems the weather has been very hot this year and I wanted to see if the lake's temperature is warming with the hot weather.

Can't wait to get up there myself and go for a swim.

We were in South Haven last Saturday and the water was very warm. It felt simlar to our pool which is in the high 70s to the low 80s. It was a very comfortable tempurature. I could nto believe that it was lake Michigan.

My kids have been swimming in Lake Michigan for almost 6 weeks already (notice I said the kids and NOT me ). In fact they are getting their suits on right now and we are headed out again. Here in the Ludington area they say the water temp is 67 today on the surface, but it feels a lot warmer than that to me. A good link to water temps for the entire Great Lakes is this site from the Michigan Sea Grant Coast watch. Click on whatever lake you want, then narrow it down by area, or city.

Thanks for the link!

I will be up there in August so I am sure the water will be warmer by then.

in Aug. the water is usually in the mid 70's. Granted it can vary widely year to year, but it should be nice.

The water temperature can change within hours. Don't let yesterday's temperature sway you about today or tomorrow. An east wind for several hours can generally blow the warm surface water out. This is then replaced by cold, deep water moving up under to replace it near shore. Conversely, a west wind will not only bring big waves onshore, but push the warm water against the beach, allowing it to warm and stay in place. It's all hydrodynamics and it's constant changing.

The good news is though, that a strong east wind that lasts a few hours is a rare thing, and I've never seen a storm front move through East to West. If the water does cool for whatever reason, it only is cooler for a day or two, then warms right back up. Right now, it is very warm in the Ludington area.

It IS constantly changing, but usually the changes in temp are quite small throughout the Summer Months.
