I fully enjoyed my first winter up here although there were some challenges and 'adjustments'. I will definitely be ready for this year!

It seems that the general consensus is that lovely SouthWest Michigan gets hammered with snow I'm just not sure on the concept of it *always* being less snowy near the lake.

Sometimes yes, sometimes no, it seems to depend on the specific weather patterns.

I kind of felt silly at times last fall and even this fall walking the beach when its cold and there is no one around. I guess I am still not used to the beautiful lake being so peaceful and accessible.

It reminds me of when I stayed in Seattle for the first time I just would stare at the mountain (Mt. Rainier I believe) because I had never seen a mountain before (being a Midwesterner) and it was so impressive to me.

The snow falls everywhere I just think in Illinois there is more money to pay for it, hence the quicker cleanup. For me, its manageable, you just have to know what you are doing and BE PREPARED!
Growing up my friends and I would go to the South Beach in the dead of winter and walk on the lake. Many fun times, not that I recommend it--for obvious reasons.

Well it depends. I worked at the Palisades nuclear plant and i witnessed a monster snowstrom coming in off Lake Michigan . It didn't mather wether it was 18 inches on the lake or 21 inches ten miles away who could tell. The lake shore also get more wind drifts which can really pile up in times.

In general most towns in the snow belt are within thirty miles of Lake Michigan shoreline. With the prevailing western winds the real snow belt starts just east of Gary and extends east to South Bend and north to Grand Rapids and points north.

wow this thread is old, but my gramma lives in covert. I visit a lot especially now that she's sick, very old and her days are limited. Covert is a great place. Their simplicity is charming. Jimmy, I hope you are still there and loving the area. My gramma is leaving the house to me so my family will be relocating there too.

The only thing notable in Covert is the KOA campground.
