I don't know if we just had good luck or what, but I kept telling my husband, "everyone here is so nice and helpful!"
If you're asking because you and your partner are perhaps in an "unconventional" relationship or something... well, since so much of their economy is dependent on vacationers, I'd bet they've seen all walks of life there!

BTW, if you want to see our vacation video...

YouTube - ‪Upper Peninsula Vacation‬‎

or just go to You tube and type in Upper Peninsula Vacation. Ours is the one that's 12 minutes long, and it's by "Onebuckfilms".

Have a great time!!
Cheers!
Marquette is your best choice for a progressive city at the edge of the wilderness....and , that goes for almost anyplace in the Country. There may be others, someone on here will tell us about , but I know of none ...quite like Marquette.

Defeintiely plan a day at Taquamenon Falls

Start at the lower falls and bring a picnic lunch. Wade out intot he river (it is very shallw), si on a little waterfall and eat your lunch. Then hike to the upper falls. (long beautiful hike, lots of climbing, mostly stairs). Have a less adventerous member of your party drive from lower falls to upper falls to pick you up.

Pictured rocks is supposed tobe reall y neat, I have never seen them that I can remember.

The Soo has the locks and lots of neat museums and information.

If you are ambitious you can go hike in the porcupine mts.

As far as "progressive" that is one of those words that gets used too much so that it no longer has any meaning. What do you mean? That term is used to mean gay friendly; pro-abortion; filled with left wing democrats; racially accepting; supportive of socialism and sociialistic ideals; having lots of modern buildings; a large percentage of the population having higher education degrees; pro-union; a place where you can move from one neat thing to another without a lot of time in between.

Anyway, I an not sure that you will find any of those things in the UP. What you find a lot of is fiercely independant people who want to be left alone and do nto like to be told what to do. Also people who are willing to pitch in when needed. It can be tough living and dangerous up there at times, at least once you are outside the cities. People have to stick together.

Having lived in the UP most of my life and trying to get out of the UP during half of it, there are good and not so good points. You like winter sports, go in the winter... ski Marquette Mountian (okay more of a large hill , snowmobiling trails everywhere, ice skating, snow shoeing, cross country and of course the UP200 dogsled race. A fresh 12" snowfall weighing down the dark green evergreens are a magnificant sight. So is the sun reflecting off the fresh snow and iced branches outshining even the most brilliant of diamonds.

Then there is Spring...hmmm, well I never did care for Spring. I did like the warm weather (hey it's 55 put on your shorts and t-shirt

Summer... summer is fun, swim in Lake Michigan, not Lake Superior.

Fall is my favorite time of year. Fall colors turn the UP into truly God's country. Go to Copper Harbor.. see the Pictured Rocks in Munising... check out the Porcupine Mountians in Ontonagan.. enjoy the crystal clear lake of Kitch-iti-Kipi.. near Manistique and as a previous poster said you should see the falls of Tahquamenon.

All in all as much as I've tried to escape it... the UP will always be a part of me.

Here's an interesting site with lots of info
Upper Peninsula of Michigan Traveler, Travel Guide to the U.P. of MI

PS. You could go to Mackinac Island... but I wouldn't, at least not more than once.
