Anyone from the Monroe area?
Hello
My family may be moving near the Lazboy plant in Monroe MI.
Can anyone at all give me a feeling of what that area is like?
I plan to visit but would love to know what to expect.
I have never met anyone from MI that wasen't nice and friendly
to me - I know we will be happy there but as we all know - crime
is everywhere and like everyone - we want to locate in a safe area.
Thanks !
Hope to hear from someone soon.

Coming to Monroe
In Monroe County, you will find all kinds of living, city, rural, and even a beach community since Monroe is right on Lake Erie. What is nice about Monroe County is that not only is it close to Detroit and Toledo but there is a lot to do right in Monroe.
If schools are important to you, there is a charter school called Triumph Academy which is K-8. There are many Catholic schools and a couple very active homeschool groups. There is much to do in Monroe and many parks. The libraries are very nice also in Monroe.
If you will let me know what kind of area you are looking for homes, I can point out a few areas to look at that I think are nicer. Do you want lake, country, city?

Monroe MI
Hello,
I have alot friends from Monroe Michigan.... You will love it there.... Every year my friends and I go to the state Fair it's on M50. Lots of things to do there all the time. People are very friendly there. They have alot shopping places, Meijer, walmart, kmart, french town mall, outlet mall right of I75, and my favorite store there is craft2000 it's the best craft store ever. I have a friend that moved to North Carolina and everytime she comes up we always go to Crafts2000. One thing I can say it far as crime goes..... stay out of the east side of Monroe. I'm talking about anything east of old town Monroe... Its very ran down. Hope this helps.

about Monroe Michigan and smaller towns around it
Hello, I use to live in Newport, Michigan its about 10 miles north of Monroe. The schools in Newport and Carlton are great. Its Airport school dis. My kids loved the schools and the small town feel. There are alot of Moblie home parks in Monroe area and if you look up info on the area, Well all of the small towns around Monroe are really nice. South of Monroe Co. is Toledo Ohio please be careful there. Lots of crime in Ohio. Oh let me tell you about a great place right off of I75 its a small town called Luna Pier, Michigan There a little fishing dock there. Very pretty, they have a great beach to go swimming and even a play ground. You can't miss the pier, once you get off the exit you can see the lake to the east... its just past the post office... its very small town. but its one of the best.... Its one of Michigan's best kept secrets. I miss living up there. But I don't miss the cold weather ( Snow ), My hubbie worked for Fords in Monroe and we got Transfured to the south ! I love the warm weather here, But I will always think of Monore Michigan as home. I hope this helps.............................

monroe area
if you are going to live by the la-z-boy plant, you will be living in 'town' but i don't think downtown monroe could be considered a real metropolis. downtown monroe is kind of quaint with older storefronts and a historic district. there are some newer, built-up areas of the city of monroe, and it is nice to see some more modern stores/restaurants cropping up, although i am a fan of my regular, dive-atmosphere bar/restaurants most of the time. there are plenty of nice outlying areas of monroe county with a country-like feel. once outside of the city limits, there are a lot of farms and open fields. therefore, people of monroe seem generally down-to-earth.
i live in flat rock just above the monroe county border, i work in monroe. it's about a 15 minute drive. flat rock, rockwood, gibraltar, brownstown township and woodhaven are all southern wayne county towns that are a little more suburb and it's nice to be smack in between the big city of detroit and the rural/suburban area of monroe, downriver people are generally pretty unpretentious.
you'll love it, good luck with your move!

Lake Erie and Monroe
What's the lakefront like in Monroe? Is it spoiled by industry or does one get the Great Lakes experience over there?

Some of the secondary (township) roads in Monroe County are in bad shape- just to cite one: Jackman Rd near Morocco Rd. The pavement is all beat to hell. Some secondary roads are paved for a distance and further on just dirt.
Have you ever heard the term "washboard road"? That's a dirt road that was smooth, but after a rain or stream flooding, farmers drive their tractors on it which leave deep tire imprints on the surface. When the sun comes out these imprints dry hard and it's like going over a washboard.

Monroe is to Michigan as the "south" is to the U.S.!
There is a nuclear power plant that dominates the skyline and waterfront called Fermi-don't beleive me-google it!
The Monroe area is Michigan's bayou!
Lake Erie has come quite a ways from its cesspool days! There was a time Lake Erie was very bad regarding pollution.
Hope this helps.

Monroe Michigan
Monroe is wonderful plesant town filled with hard working good people. Lots of old victorians and some pretty classy new areas as well. It is true you do not want to move to the east end but other than that all of Monroe is very safe and affordable. The lake area is very affordable and pretty but the fermie plant is there as well. Still I love the "beaches" as the lake communities are called. Very eclectic mix of houses and friendly people. google frenchtown as most of the beach area is located in frenchtown which is really part of monroe . The town of dundee is nice also if you like farm land area with a fast growning town. Maybe is cool too very small. Really Monroe is the best Michigan has to offer
