I live in a worse off town then GR...and I hardly ever hear a majority of people say they hate Michigan and hate their city. I have a feeling you are pretty young. If thats the case...most young people do say they hate their city and state, its just the way it is with a lot of young people...just to complain, and they naturally want to live where its warm year round.

Being frank: I find Grand Rapidians to be sour, selfish, lost-seeming, PREJUDICED and generally, but not always, inhospitable people.

I see almost NO difference between them and New Yorkers barely down to the accents.

Sounds like you need to move again. I have never run into those types of people in any meaningful numbers in GR. Sure a few sourpusses, but you will find those people EVERYWHERE, especially if that is what you are expecting or looking for at this point. Sometimes it takes a few moves and a few more years of personal growth to figure out 99.9999% of the time the problem is NOT everyone else, but instead yourself. Remember the old saying: "No matter where you go, there you are."

Good luck in your next location wherever that may be.

Michigan isn't for everyone, and I say the same thing about Arizona.

I've known a few folks that came out here to party with the palm trees, swimming pools, and great golf......and end up moving in 18 months after experiencing the daily grind.

The first time my wife visited MI in the summertime?

She never realized that there were so many shades of green.

The first time she experienced winter in MI?

She never realized it can get THAT cold.

Should have seen the look on my sister's face when we stepped outside of Phoenix's Sky Harbor airport in July.

Yep.

Just like an oven.

This has been said before, but draw a line from G.R. to Holland and it's quite conservative. Many people have their guard up or their "wagons circled", if you will. Like Ayn Rand, they prefer people who are "useful".

Seriously? Nice rewrite of my post; That is NOT what I said, and I DO understand the problem. Probably better than you do by the sound of it.

If that is the way you feel though, it just shows how much you really DO need to leave and find your place on this Earth. Obviously GR is not a good fit for you or your personality, that isn't the cities fault OR the peoples fault.. that is just not fitting in. Obviously you are immature enough to not be able to take an objective look at the situation and see it is neither your fault OR the city and it's peoples fault... gotta lay the blame somewhere though it seems, and GR and it's people are easier targets than taking a good hard look inside and coming to the conclusion you didn't explore the city enough before moving to it. I've done the same thing in the past when I was younger and more immature myself: Couldn't be my fault I didn't fit into a place, must be EVERYBODY else who loved being there and got along fine. Couple moves like that and it begins to shine some light at the dark end of the tunnel... maybe everybody else is fine and I was the one with the problem of not doing my due-diligence about an area before moving there.

Like I have said before and I sincerely mean it: Good Luck in your next move and your next city, hope you find a good fit and you feel at home finally.

Give the Lansing, Ann Arbor or Kalamazoo areas a try then. I actually attended MSU for a few years and liked it. East Lansing was a nice college town, with quite a bit to do. Same with Ann Arbor, but it is twice the size in terms of population. If you want something more affordable in that area, perhaps try Ypsilanti. It has Eastern Michigan University, which has a high Black student enrollment between 20-25%. It is literally right down the road from Ann Arbor and is closer to Detroit. I'm actually surprised that no one mentioned this about Ypsilanti or EMU.

Everywhere I go...there I am!

Yep, the problem may not be the place but rather the person! However, best wishes city boy in your search for an ideal place to work and live.
