Thanks; The one thing I seem to have lots of is conversation. Infact , I have been accused of overselling the U.P. and Marquette in general. Then there are those who think I am attempting to over populate the place and destroy the very reason many move here in the first place.
Actually , I have little influence, there are many sites for info on moving here , but through most of the hype the real dope still comes from those of us who are living the dream, the good the bad and the ugly ( very little of that ).
You yourself have said it well also , when you describe the feeling you get when crossing the Big Bridge. We share that remoteness on a smaller scale with Alaska, but the feeling is the same. What makes the U.P. special , IS the fact that we always have been somewhat disconected with the other Michigan, I still want that feeling to remain, and I think it will, due to if for nothing else , our local of being off the grid of cross country daily living. lets hope that part never changes....all that much.

I also believe the U.P separates the people who have a fantasy to move there, and dont really think of the reality..... from the people who actually love it for what it really is. You have to be a special kind of person to live in the U.P., and most could not handle it. Thats why the U.P is so awesome...it is filled with the people who choose to live there because they love nature, and the slower paced life. Thats why the people are so friendly.... and not fake.
We live in Louisville, Ky.(which is becoming the murder capital of the south) and are moving to Iron Mountain in October. My husband is a disabled vet and volunteers at the local Va and will do so in Iron Mt. We need a handicapped acessible house (no apartment) close to the VA hospiital. We are both retired and I need a house with no steps. Are all the neighborhoods nice? Are there storage unit facilities? Is there public transportation? What is the state sales tax? We have so many questions and would love to have any info you can provide us with. Are there brochures or pamphlets available? Thanks so much for any info, Beverly Winningham. bev1739@hotmail.com
It's so strange, I vaguely recall posting this forum- and it just so happens that my husband, who works for the V.A. here in Omaha has an interview Thursday to transfer to the V.A. in Iron Mountain---yes, we have been trying for the last two years, lol. Beverly, how lucky you are to be able to move there! I honestly don't know much about it, other than it is a small town almost on the Wisconsin border- but there are woods, and there are trees, and beasties that go bump in the night, and stars and nature- and isn't that the real reason we all love it so much? Are you looking to buy or to rent? There don't seem to be a lot of rentals available in the area (I've checked it for a while, I don't see much), but homes for sale are seriously, seriously inexpensive- so much house for so little money- Kingsford, I believe, is somewhat "attached" to Iron Mountain, and there is also Norway close by, and Vulcan...I think around 10 miles away.
I've never been there, but would move in a heartbeat without a question- our main concern was a job, but that is the one good thing about us moving to Omaha-my husband managed to land a federal job with the V.A., and for as insecure as jobs are these days, I would guess those type are about as secure as one could hope to have. We lived in Northern Michigan for a while, and we loved it simply for the reasons that someone else posted above; the nature, slower pace of life, and friendly, "real" people.

Reason: I forgot----the lakes! How could I forget all of the glorious lakes???!!!
Well Mostie, I hope your husband's interview went well today....wouldn't it be wonderful to be in Iron Mt. today where it's much cooler than it is here in Louisville...It's 103 right now and heading for 106 or 107 this weekend....I hope they ban fireworks this weekend...it hasn't rained in weeks and the sewers are starting to give off foul odors....We went to Target today and bought lots of jumbo Space Bags to pack with..we thought about using a Pod delivery system to move with, but by the time the expenses are added up, it will be cheaper to sell everything and just start over in a new location..will use Space Bags for blankets and winter clothes, shoes, personal papers and we're scanning all photo albums onto discs and going to pack everything flat..the first thing I'm going to have to eat when I get there is a "pasty"..heard soooo much about them and looking forward to enjoying so many different foods and seeing different scenery..most of all it will be wonderful to have CLEAN air to breathe...I know our accent is going to be entirely different than the "Yoopers" and we'll probably have to get used to some teasing...Well, I could ramble on and on as I'm so excited about this move but I'll close for now hoping your husband had good luck today....Beverly.
Mary, It does sound as if they are very, very interested in hubby for the job...It looks like you'll be on your way soon..It's hot there too but not like here (105) and higher tomorrow and Sunday (109)..records all over the area...Wish we were already there...
Since I'm confined indoors, I started sorting things and we are having our 1st yard sale tomorrow and there will be more of them...Dale, my hubby, volunteers at our VA hospital and has listed lots of stuff on the hospital personel site...I've had calls all day.. Am selling an Orek vacumn, Kitchen Aid Pro stand mixer, 6ft bookcases, media tables, flat screen tv's, tower computers, freezer, washer & dryer, dish washer, lamps, pictures, dishes, cookware, so much more....books will go to VA....We put lots of stuff on the porch tonight and Dale will be getting up at 6am to set stuff out...yard sale folks get out early...
We have had many, many late night discussions about options for household goods and by the time we get the stuff up there via U-Haul, Pod, U-Pack, etc, it will be almost as cheap to get what we need up there....We are in our 60's and like you, we will wait till we get there to rent permanent housing...We figured by Oct. most of the vacationers will be gone and that should free up housing...We want to be in town close to Va and walking distance to shopping...We really don't want to travel in this heat because I can't do heat and I'm afraid of traffic jams or car trouble or God forbid, an accident and end up sitting in the heat...I wouldn't last 10 min.....
Are your kids looking forward to moving? It sounds like it will be a kid's paradise....We have been on numerous Iron Mt sites and sent for relocation packets and info on stuff like laundromats, super markets, credit unions, public transportation, do you have to take a drivers test?
Are you moving an entire household of goods? We bought a bunch of jumbo "Space Bags" to put winter clothes and comforters and personal papers in and will probably get a roof top carrier to put a lot of things in that I can't bear to part with...I'm kinda looking forward to getting new stuff for our new life..
It looks like there are plenty of medical facilities there and that will be a relief when it comes to the kids and the schools sound really up to date...
Dale lived in Flint, Mich. for some years and loved ice fishing and "smelts" (yuk) ..I spent the summer in Coldwater, Mich. when I was 11 (a lifetime ago) and it was beautiful there....Louisville is really becoming a place no one enjoys any more...go to CourierJournal.com and you'll see why....There are sections of town you DO NOT want to go near...The air quality is the worst in the entire Ohio Valley Area....Lots of government corruption....It's really hard to get in to see a Dr. and most everyone I know has started going to 24 hr clinics....they even have them in groceries now.....I was born and raised here and am so disapointed in the way the city has turned out...Oh well, I'll be out of here soon....
Dale is the DAV state rep and has to go to Las Vegas in August for 3 days of meetings and one of his sons live there...I hope he gets to see the Dam and other sites...I told him to use all the $$ from the yard sales for Vegas and he got out an old jewelry box to use for $$ tomorrow...This will be the first yard sale he's had and as he's a people person (doesn't know a stranger) I'm sure he'll enjoy the whole day and hopefully he won't come in and grab stuff in the house to sell....hee hee...I'll be busy keeping him hydrated...
Well, I've rambled on & on and it's sooo good to find someone who's going on an adventure like us... so anxious to hear what you find out about the town when you get there....I guess we'll also be staying in a motel like you when we get there ...Can't wait to taste "Pasties" and other foods I'm not familiar with (except for smelts) ..Dale bought some here at Whole Foods Grocery and that's how I know how yucky they are.....
It's midnight here and I've got to go to bed as I KNOW he's going to make sure he wakes me up in the morning.....Hoping to hear from you soon....Beverly Winningham
