I lived in Roscommon on the east side of Higgins Lake for awhile. Your best options for food is Fred's in Roscommon. It's bar/bowling alley/restaurant. It terms of stores, all the towns around are dumps. Houghton Lake has a Walmart and Kmart. Roscommon has nothing outside of Fred's. Well there is a Family Dollar. There aren't many public beaches on Higgins Lake since the locals hate out of towners using the lake. Your best bet is one of the state parks. North Higgins Lake state park is nice. It's about 8-10 miles down from Roscommon and Fred's. If you plan to go to Fred's, go early because it fills fast. The only entertainment around is Fred's.

An overview of the area? It's one of the poorest areas in the state and the towns are all run down. Higgins Lake has a lot of nicer homes. The locals are really trying to keep it private. Houghton Lake is more public friendly, but the beaches are terrible. There are 2 state parks in Higgins Lake. North Higgins Lake State park is closer to Roscommon and Fred's than South. If you don't plan to spend your whole time on the lake, there's really nothing to do there.

i live in houghton lake and there are 2 beaches to go to one in h.l. heights and one in prudenville the one in heights is rocky but there is a small playground pavillion a couple of grills and a porta potty prudenville beach is decent with restrooms and a few kids play things Higgins lake is pretty but normally cold! the beaches are pretty busy! Fred's has very good pizza and bowling but is small. The family restaurant in H.L. co road 100 and M-18 is a good place to eat.If you are looking for places to go H.L. has alot of putt-putt courses, and little shops. The best place for ice cream is Sno Queen in H.L. Pretty much everything in H.L. is right on M-55. Yes we are on of the poorest towns in MI but that does not say anything about our town! Look at detroit or flint see how run down they are.

LOL don't go to the beach in Prudenville. Stay in Higgins Lake and pay the $6 or whatever it is to go to the state park. That beach has a picnic table and is only about 20 yards wide. Yes there is an unusual number of putt putt golf courses in Houghton Lake. Also Fred's is bigger than anything in Houghton Lake, including the restaurant the poster mentioned. Where are these small shops? Everything is closed.

BTW, here is the Prudenville beach

That is not prudenville beach that is a bar and a not so great one, so you might want to check your information! There is alot of shops here and they are not all closed! You must not have been looking. Also it is not about how big the restaurant is it's all about the food!

LOL look straight ahead. That's the beach. That's where you park. What are the names of these shops? IIRC Ox Yoke across the street from that beach closed. There's a Dollar General, Walmart shopping center, half empty shopping center by Glens, there's Arnies if you like to do crafts, Limberlost is an ok bar, all the motels are closed, there's Spicers if you need boat supplies, Funland isn't bad if you have kids, but if you are looking for quaint little shops, you won't find them in Houghton Lake.
