I know if I go out to a shooting range I am libel to shoot 250-500 rounds or more depending on the firearm I am shooting with. Last time I went hunting I used 1 round out of a .270, and then recovered the bullet with the animal. You are trying to compare apples and oranges with using the clean-up problem faced by Elk Rapids as a comparison to the danger/problem with using lead bullets for hunting.
In linking to the Elk Rapids story I'm not trying to make a case for lead pollution from hunting in any way, as that's not what the story is about. I'm merely pointing out that lead ammo CAN be a pollution problem in some situations like a gun club or waterfowl hunting wiht lead shot in certain areas. Duck hunters seem to be doing just fine without lead, despite the near hysterical predictions of the end of that sport.
I don't think there's any more of a chance that hunting activity will cause widespread lead pollution than there is that Obama will be knocking on your door to confiscate your guns or ammo. Ain't gonna happen, and the fear is not based in reality.
Earlier someone pointed at bald eagle population increases as a benefit derived from hunters. While some hunting money was/is used for eagle habitat and breeding, the return of the birds has far, far more to do with the banning of DDT, which didn't kill eagles but thinned their eggshells to the point that they rarely survived to hatching time.
Hunters are generally good citizens and fine people as far as the natural world is concerned, but they didn't save the eagles.

Well good for you. Go ahead and eat some more split shots...it's up to you. You probably played wiht the lead-based tinsel used on Christmas trees if you're an old fart like me. So what?
Get a test for heavy metals and see what that shows. Nothing, I hope. Unless your poisoning was acute you'd probably not know there was a problem, but that doesn't mean there aren't negative and dangerous effects, paticularly with the nervous system and brain.

Yeppers. I love to exercise my rights and my marksmanship on a regular basis. Love to accurize my rifles, reload my own ammo.....and shoot fairly long distances.

I am a gun nut....and a patriot.

Missing one big point in all of this. The EPA has no authority under the Constitution to ban or regulate anything. What if we all just said no?

I'd rather be a shrimp nut...in general the company is better and the conversation more interesting.

So much for the fake, trumped up "they're trying to take our ammo away" crisis...lol
