Both of my folks' parents used to own homes in Oak Park when I was a little kid and my folks graduated from Oak Park High. I now joke with them, "Your old house is now a crack house."

Go for Ferndale (there are good and bad "neighbors" in both communities). Being too close to downtown Ferndale can be a headache in itself.

Being close to downtown Ferndale affords more safety, as their are more people around day and night walking to and back from the downtown. You do need to worry about excessive noise on the weekends however if you live close to one of the bar/restaurant/nightclubs.

Just take a look at a crime map. Ferndale is red! I have lived in Oak Park for 31 years and have never had a crime problem. Its a beautiful place to live. Full of Oak trees and feels like a park, nature setting.

Hands down, "Fashionable" Ferndale would be a far better place to invest than Oak Park. I say "invest" because you really need to think about resale value--where your house will most likely retain or appreciate in value, and where it would be easier to sell. If you've decided on that general area, if you can afford to get something in Royal Oak that would probably be even better.

If you are considering Oak Park, I'd recommend sticking with the Berkley School District.

If you're buying, I'd recommend Ferndale. Ferndale has more name recognition in terms of desirable places to live for resale value should you need it. The downtown is walkable and includes everything from staples such as Tim Horton's and Wendy's to niche restaurants like Anita's Kitchen or Bangkok Cafe. There are festivals throughout the summer to keep the place lively and tax dollars flowing into the city coffers. The library just off 9 Mile/Woodward is one of my favorite ones to just get caught up on business magazines. Their library has fireplaces and comfy chairs that remind you of the interior of Carribou Coffee.

Honestly the best advise would be to pick two successive Saturday's or Sunday's. Spend one in Ferndale and one in Oak Park and see which one you like more. It's only a 15 min drive from SCS.
