Default Moving to the Cheboygan/Mack City area, please read

My fiancee accepted a position in Cheboygan and starts in a few weeks. We need to find somewhere to live ASAP. My question is, how the hell do I find somewhere to live? I guess we'd be looking in the Cheboygan, Mackinaw City, Indian RIver....etc area.

What is usually an easy task has proven to be quite difficult as there's not much of an internet presence for apartments or homes to rent in the area. I've checked loads of housing websites and haven't come up with much.

The one place that I plan on checking out is Lighthouse Village Apartments. Almost by default because they have some info on the internet and also they don't take section 8.
I would prefer staying away from places that take section 8. The more money my neighbors have, the better I feel about my belongings staying in their rightful place.

I need a place that accepts dogs as well.
I'm open to living anywhere within about a 20 minute drive. If winters weren't so bad, I'd move to Petoskey in a heartbeat, but the winter commute would be brutal.

Some of the rentals on Mullett lake and other lakes in the area rent for very cheap from now until May.

There are quite a few realtors in the area I can recommend a few if you send me a message.

Also call the Cheboygan Area Chamber of Commerce for recommendations. I know there are houses for rent as some of my friends rent them! Good luck and I would be happy to answer any other questions!

Ps-i know some cheboygan people who work in petoskey so they commute every day! but if you aren't used to winter driving it can be VERY tough!

Any news on when it will be ready?
That could theoretically get me through an otherwise boring winter

Check the local newspaper. That's how I found a place in Gaylord. It wasn't section 8 and I still had stuff stolen, damaged and had to turn him in for child abuse.

So, we found a place (I think!... like 95% sure...lol).
I actually put some $$ down ahead of time even though it's not 100% sure. I should know tomorrow, though.

Also, for anyone else moving to the area, here is some info I found out about the section 8 stuff.
The reason every apartment place in the area is sec 8 is because many locals only work 7 months per year in tourism jobs and then are on unemployment for 5 months.... so the apt complexes make it income based to help them or something.....

For people like me, however, it's a major hindrance because there is an income limit that comes along with that.... and just one of us makes more than the max the two of us would be allowed to make as a couple.... so we're pretty much forced to look at houses, which are slim pickings for rentals.
My fingers are crossed, hopefully this one goes through!

HEY, just wanted to say i know someone had asked (maybe it was in a direct message) what to do if you don't like snow or the outdoors in winter...in cheboygan....I have been thinking lots...and remembered there are a couple new gyms and fitness centers in cheboygan! boxfit and body by brach (women only) and there used to be a stayfit place.......
Sports! Going to high school games is fun....joining the men's or women's hockey league, or men's or women's basketball leagues, jaycees club, business after-hours are social get-togethers for the community that different businesses throughout the year host (small fee for food and drinks-like $5)....restaurants - variety I can give more details of these (a few more have popped into my head), the community theatre group-Northland Players, plays and music events at the Opera House (some really great things come through like Garrison Kealor, Jeff Daniels, or the Nelson brothers)...hmmm i'm keeping my mind going of indoors things to do in the winter...
someone said this in another thread - EUCHRE!!! so important

Okay, these ideas have been churning in my head when I'm supposed to be doing grad work so I thought I'd get them out

ps-idw2s- I wanna come to this party-have it next summer

and jimthurber- I hope the house rental searching has been going well!!! from what i hear the Inverness haunted halls is pretty decent for a local haunted house if you are in cheboygan in the next few weeks (i've never been....the coast guard haunted ship was always my favorite-think that ended with the newer ship and crew)....
