I don't know how many miles it is exactly, but I know Flint is about 5 hours from Chicago. (I live about 45 minutes north of Flint and it takes me almost 6 hours to get to Chicago). You will cross time zones on the way there though, so also take that into account.

I live less than 10 miles from Flint, and it took me almost 6 hours last time I went. 5 to six and a half is typical with traffic depending on where in Chicago you are going. When I went to the NASCAR race at Chicagoland, it took me a little over 4 hours, but that is south of Chicago and you don't deal with much traffic.
Personally, I prefer taking the train to driving! But it is not too far out of your way. If you go straight up US-23 from Toledo to Flint, it takes less than 2 hours. If you are coming from Chicago, you would take I-69, which angles toward Flint, so you might be looking at about 3 extra hours added to your total drive.
