I don't post here much, but I'm a Michigan Native, MSU class of 08.

I currently work with the Forest Service in extreme southern Illinois (it's 8 hours back to home in Barry County).

So I'm sitting in my office last week, and what wonders do my ears behold but Yoopers! It turns out that a couple of Forest Service fire crews from Keewenaw have come down to help our crews out with a couple of big blow-down areas we have and are getting ready to burn.

Later that afternoon, I'm telling our fire boss, Scott, that it brought tears of joy to my eyes to hear Yoopers, a little slice of home, ya know? And he asked "You can tell where they're from?" I just laughed and laughed. I was like "you can't?" It just strikes me funny that not everyone has ever heard yoopers. But any good Michigan native can pick that out in a crowd.

Not really , we have so many folks from all over up here now, especially in Marquette. We know who they are , mostly Finns . You can tell by their last names , and where many live in the woods. Great slice of Amercana , but with 9,000 students at NMU, the U.P. is becoming quite mixed.

Dar has a point. Marquette has always had a more transient population dating back from the air force days. The smaller towns in th U.P. have a much "thicker accent." Of course Marquette natives still have an accent just not as pronounced. My Father in law from west Ishpeming is very noticeable. one, two, tree...

Most of the thickest accents in the UP are west of Marquette. You dont hear as much of it on the eastern half of the UP. Of course the eastern UP has a stronger Canadian influence eh. lol

I was just joking about that but I notice a lot of similarities in the way the people talk and live in both places. I just love the UP and it's one of the most beautiful places in the USA. I have had an interest in the UP since I was a kid and first read Hemmingways short stories that were set in the UP. I finally got there for the first time 3 years ago when I was 54 years old. It was worth the wait and I have been back quite a few times since.

A lot of people have not " discovered" Upper Michigan yet. Few , know about Hemingway's exploits in the U.P. His favorite fishing grounds were right here in Marquette County.... Not everything Hemingway did was connected to Havana and Key West...as most think. The influence of the Huron Mountain Club had a lot to do with the preservation of the wilds around here these last 121 years , along with many famous people who even today remain anonymous in the eyes of the average public.

I never said ALL Yoopers have that distinctive accent. But the ones that do, it's easy to tell where they're from.

I never did make it north of the Bridge this year. I've got a friend who lives with me from South Carolina, and he's DYING to go 'up north'. I keep promising to take him. Strikes me odd that the fastest way to get there from here is through Wisconsin... And it takes the same amount of time as from home. Especially accounting for traffic backups at the bridge.

Yeah... sadly that happens where ever you may go. Sometimes 'controlled burns' get out of control.

We never did do our big burn here (300 acres) as the Keewenaw guys got called out to a fire in Ohio.
