Yes, White flight is right. I grew up in a practically all-White city, now it's mostly mexicans. That is definitely not what the founding fathers intended; not what my grandpa faught for in a war; not the country I grew up in. America should be a good country, not a country I can't recognize.

I have never posted about Detroit but I would like to defend my feeling of being threatened by Detroit. I would have to say that growing up in a smaller city has a lot to do with it; Detroit is intimidating! Specifically when it is so high on the list of most dangerous places to live (sometimes number one) every year. My husband who is from Detroit has driven us there many times to do many different things and go different places and honestly the only places that have been seriously intimidating in person have been driving by huge, condemned, many floored apartment buildings which are obviously still occupied.

You have to admit there are some areas of the city that would be intimidating to anybody.

As for what a ghetto is...the only time I've actually heard this term used actually describing a real place (not including historically) has been about the "student ghetto". Now, maybe that is because I live in a college town (Kalamazoo), And the distinctions here are more about student rentals verses family properties.

I'm not trying to defend everyone; I can't speak for anyone but me. I just happen to think that your narrowing everyone into a category, trying to make everyone who is intimidated by Detroit feel like bad people, or raciest for feeling that way. I, for one, am not raciest and yet I feel threatened by Detroit at times.

I feel bad that I didn't read through all the posts before responding to the thread. I only wanted to respond to the original poster; I didn't know my post would follow such an hate filled, ignorant post. I think I must be naive because my mouth dropped when reading this post...I mean I "knew" that there must be people who thought this way, but I guess I didn't really "Know"

I agree with rocks4 and professor1 and im black. This whole thread doesnt make sense is white flight right the answer is YES. Its ok for other races to come mess up white neighborhoods but whites are supposed to stay put cause its racist if you dont live with minorities. Last I checked its a free country we could move anywhere we want. I left detroit 4 months ago cause its a hellhole now i live in macomb county where alot of other detroiters are moving too.

The flight usually starts long before there are any crime problems. In metro Detroit as soon as a black family moves into a neighborhood everyone moves because of fear of crime, property values go down and it's a self fulfilling prophecy because it becomes a low income area which tend to attract drugs, which attracts crime.

At some point people have to stop moving out of fear, most likely if everyone had stayed put that neighborhood would be a nice mixed race working or middle class area.
I grew up in a nice family oriented part of Detroit and that is what I saw happen.

Professor1 what is the povertly levels like in those areas? I really do not believe high crime can be attributed soley to a person's race; there are many other factors that must be considered.

Detshen is right they mostly move before the crime starts going up because they think with blacks moving in more crime will follow. Poverty matters alittle bit but not as much as they have you believe. Statistics show blacks are more likely to do crime then whites even if they both live in poverty stricken areas.
