marsha marsha marsha!!!!!
Dont know if anyone has mentioned this but.. taste probably accounts for a good portion of "flight". If you grew up in a 1960/70s Brady Bunch split level in a neighborhood full homes designed by Mike Brady... if you decide to remain in your hometown.. you may want a larger home, soaking tub, sep. shower, two car garage, a town center within walking distance etc. You may not be able to find that in your old Greg and Marsha 'hood.. so when you leave the nest.. you buy a home in the a "new" suburb. When mom and dad pass on..the old house is rented or sold.. it becomes affordable to someone possibly a minority and they buy/rent. The neighborhood then changes because of attrition with peoples' parents dying off and their children moving or resettling elsewhere not necessarily because of race but housing preferences and life style choices

I'm guessing the majority of people are thinking of Detroit.
They should just get everyone out of that crap hole of a city and use it for urban military training. There is nothing good about Detroit.

Why not help to revive Detroit and make it better. I know Detroit is very dangerous and very poor, not to mention few jobs, but that is why there is plenty of work that needs to be done. As bad as things are, there is stiil a way where Detroit can gain population again, have more jobs, and have a lower crime rate.
Detroit's sad narrative is that racial issues combined with other problems and that is why Detroit is the way it is now.

That looks like the same situation in some of the suburbs in my area.

Or people in Detroit could do what billions have done in history, and adapt to their situation. The situation is Detroit is a crumbling city, with high crime, corrupt politics (What city doesnt), high unempoyment, with its major industry (Automotive) dying. I wonder what this country would be like if Americans always had the mindset that someone would be there to bail them out. No one would have gone west, just lived off unemployment on the East coast forever. Much easier

I think everyone is using today's economic climate to plead their case for a bailout.. oh with the exception of Domino's Pizza per their recent commercial

I live in Detroit. In the year that i have been here my car has been broken into twice, calls to police have went unheeded. I have watched people shoot up at the gas station. I am constantly asked for money every time i get out of the car. And this area is considered a "nicer" part, I would hate to see the rough parts of this city. I guess police only respond to shootings. NEVER move to detroit, I personally am counting the days until I move, and reasonably unless you are making money off crime in this city, any upstanding citizen would move out too!!!!!!

Great responce willy1979. Well said.
There is nothing wrong with wanting to be somewhere that you think is better for you and your family. But there is an ingraned idea in Michigan and all of America for that matter, That a white neiborhood is safer than anything else. It just makes things easier to hide, and easier to be forgiven for something. Until something happens.. then everyone in the community is just so shocked.
"thats a good family, I cant beleive there kids shot up that school". or "He is a blockclub leader, Im just shocked he kept that young girl locked in his basement".
Here me America! Dont be so concerned with the minority familiies moving in, with the teenagers that listen to loud rap music! All teenagers are loud!.
Be more concerned about so called perfect neibor, 40 something single guy, who never seems to have any family visit..
Or is allways outside working in the yard when the school bus is around. Wake up people!!

I've been living in Southfield most of my life and I just cannot understand why so many WHITE, yes WHITE people feel threatened by the city? Is it so hard to believe that civilized middle to upperclassed BLACKS can live competently in an environment with whites as well without turning it into a "Ghetto?" And by the way, that term seems to just be a code for a predominantly black area, no matter the property values or upkeep. If rap music is heard playing loudly it is a "ghetto." If rock music is heard playing loudly, it is considered to root from the rebellious youth of white suburbia. I am not a racist, before someone calls me one. I went to private school all my life, and was surrounded at all times by more white than black. I'VE EVEN DATED A BEAUTIFUL WHITE WOMAN, however - it seems that no matter what black people do to prove themselves, white America still does not trust us.
Please defend yourselves.

I left Detroit because I was tired of living like a hermit behind locked doors. I was tired of having to drive to the suburbs to do my grocery shopping because it wasn't safe to get out of your car in a parking lot anywhere on Joy road. I was tired of parks littered with glass and needles that I couldn't use anyway.
Sorry but I think anyone who could get out of the city would Why stay?
Detroit has some nice areas to visit, in a group during daylight hours, but it's no place to live if you can avoid it. I have no idea why it's, predominatly whites moving out of the city. I'd think living there would motivate anyone to move. Sure motivated me to get an education so I could get out.
