Question Traverse City Info Needed

I posted a thread the other day and have only received one response. I really wanted to find out more about Traverse City schools. I have two children and am really interested to see what people think of the school system there. I also wanted to find out if the kindergarten is full or half-day.

If anyone wants to throw in any other general information regarding TC, then by all means...jump right in!

Thanks!

I live in Kalkaska, which is about 20 minutes east of Acme/Traverse City.

You should be able to call the Traverse Area Public Schools to get general info about curriculum and times.

As far as the city goes...

I'm gonna be honest...

DON'T MOVE UP HERE.
DON'T.

It's nice looking (especially in the summer!) but the job market and payscale is complete crap up here. It has been for years, ever since the recession started in 2000 and has reached all-time lows this year.

North of Grand Rapids, Traverse City is the biggest, fastest growing and exciting town you'll find.

But with that being said, I must say that Traverse is dreadfully boring and is a tourist / families and people over 40 town. People 18-30 are non-existent and educated people with degrees are even harder to find.

The **ONLY** way I'd recommend moving up here is if you KNOW FOR A FACT you have a job that will be yours for the next 5-10 years (when the recession's worst parts finally go away) and YOU ARE MARRIED.

Dating is impossible up here and if you're a girl looking for a guy - you better like hillbilly outdoor construction folk - because that's all you'll find.

I recommend moving to Grand Rapids or Kalamazoo if you want to live in Michigan.

Good grief; this forum is where people come to get useful information about an area they are interested in moving to NOT to get a running negative commentary. Let's at least make an effort to give the poster the information she asked for--about schools in TC. You may want to check out this website for starters, dojilynn:

Most counties have web sites. If you look around, there is all kinds of information. Taxes, on each property is posted, lots of other stuff. I use these site in my business each day. The Michigan state web site has links to most.

I told her to contact the Traverse Area Public Schools --- exactlyw hat she asked for. Then she said, "If anyone wants to throw in any other general information regarding TC, then by all means...jump right in!"

If people want sugarcoated lies, then don't come here. I'm trying to save this lady a lot of trouble if she hasn't decided 100% to move here yet. TC is a step BACKWARD and DOWN, regardless of what you think. The city is NOT moving forward and the area is seriously limping because no one is building homes hardly (which drive sthe economy up here)...which means lots of people are out of work.

Just move here blindly if you don't want to hear the truth. Simple as that.

And FYI, I'm moving away from here next month so I'm not just blowing smoke outta my *****

Thank you for the responses. I have been looking online for information as well. PJMiami, thank you for the link above, it was helpful.

As for the job situation, it looks like my husband may be getting a job there. If the job doesn't work out, we won't be moving there, simple as that.

Also, since I'm already married, the "hillbilly outdoor construction folk" won't bother me.

The last person you want to listen to when it comes to moving your family to Traverse City is some bitter, sexually frustrated on his way out Kalkaska guy.
Traverse is a gorgeous, growing, family friendly town with great schools.
That whole area from Leelanau over to T.C and up to Petoskey is my
favorite part of Michigan. And one of my favorite places ANYWHERE. It's true, you do get a lot of tourists in the summer but If you have a job lined up it would be a great place to live.
There is a LOT of money which translates into a surprising amount of
culture for a city that size. You also have the incredible Interlochen
arts academy nearby where Norah Jones, Jewel and countless others have gone. You should pay a visit first and you'll see how ridiculous these negative posts are. Except for the traffic how can you find anything negative to say about that area?

Wabbit, you're a JERK.

So because I'm trying to tell this lady (who didn't mention a husband in her first post) that she needs to be realistic about the dating opportunities up here, I am sexually frustrated? Whatever.

Like I said, this is an area for retired folk or people w/ families. Single people need not apply.

And so what, because I live in the Kalkaska area I'm not entitled to speak about Traverse, even though the vast majority of people (inlcuding me) in towns surrounding TC work and commute to TC every day of the week almost??? To the lady moving up here - this is a perfect example of the snobbiness you'll encounter in the area. TC people - even if they're hillbilly poor folk - think they're better than anyone else around. So be warned. Move RIGHT in TC or prepare to get cut down by strangers anytiem you mention where you live.

And finally, having A JOB lined up isn't enough up here. Many places have been cutting back in terms of employment - Don't believe me? Look at the Record Eagle - the job classifieds are paltry at best this year. People aren't hiring. And because the job market up here is so tiny (and there are few jobs that actually pay well) you better make sure you have a job that WILL EXIST for a few years.

Because if you lose your job up here, you are *****d.

So do what you want.

Oh, and the Interlochen Arts school is an elitist bunch of phonies/yuppies in training. It's nothing but a place you dump lots of money into so your kid can learn how to play a flute until he reaches Middle/High School and realizes its more fun to get high and shoot fireworks at his friends.

And if I sound bitter, I am. My family & I spent thousands of dollars and years of our time giving to this area and trying to make it a good place to live...but no matter what we try we can't ever get ahead up here - so my siblings are heading out of the state altogether (one is California already) and my older parents are probably gonna move out of state too in the next five years or so. So when people say, "Traverse City is soooo great!", I say to them, "Not if you live here. It pisses on the local residents - which is why the majority of people who live up here are tourists."

Scotty boy,
I'm sure I'm not the first person you've called names. Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't you the type of guy who's family grits their teeth every time you come home? Needless to say, you are I are from different planets. I'm far from rich and yet I admire people who work hard and make alot of money. I've never felt resentment for people based on their wealth. In fact, more power to them. Contrary to the rantings of some bitter union gravytrainer most people who ARE rich didn't have it handed to them on a platter. It takes a lot of time, effort and talent to get rich. You hate them for it because of your own shortcomings, I tip my hat to them.
I truly do hope, for your family's sake, that you find a place where you can support them and give them everything they need to succeed in life. I also hope, and pray that they don't listen to a word you say, because the seed your planting will do nothing but deny a child any hope of achieving the success and wealth you so resent.

Dude, what ARE you talking about!?!?!

I never spoke about rich people in my posts, so where are you getting that from? And since when do I resent wealth???

Also, where did I mention I was supporting my family here? I'm 25 and single - why on earth would I be supporting my parents and siblings?
