Question Life in Michigan

I am planning on taking a new job in the Wixom/New Hudson area. I have been looking for more information on activities and lifestyle traits in that area. I will be in that area for at least two to three years and want to make the most of it.If anyone can help with things to do and places to go I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks and have a great day.

I moved here 4 years ago from Colorado...personally, I don't really enjoy living here nearly as much. I'll be moving back out west in two years, and won't miss it. I've made some excellent friends though, I'll miss them.
On the other hand, I know someone who moved here from South Carolina - he loves it and plans to stay.
It's what you make of it, and what you enjoy doing recreationally, in part. Perhaps where you're moving from makes a difference - I'm up near Flint and find the area terribly provincial compared to Colorado. I love the seasons, although winter can get a bit long and dreary.
There's several really nice state & county recreation areas in that area, if you like boating, fishing and hiking. You won't be far from either Detroit and Ann Arbor, both of which have plenty to offer. Detroit's Eastern (farmers) market is awesome; there's casinos if you like that, and you're only a couple of hours from Canada (more casinos). A2 is a typical progressive university city, lots happening there...music, good restaurants, eclectic shopping.
Going "up north" is a popular pastime for many. There's tons of lakes everywhere and the further north you go the prettier it gets.
Plenty of art fairs and such in summer, the Renaissance festival is an hour away in Aug-Sept. Many big shopping malls and centers.
I believe Wixom & surrounding areas is fairly low crime....a mixture of small towns, farmland & suburbia. Don't know about the schools but I'm guessing they are not bad.
There's more racial segregation and tension here than I'm used to, if that makes a difference to you. But, life is what you make it....
There's quite a lot of development happening, your take on housing costs will depend on what you're used to. Realtor.com and the city data page will yield lots of info.

Thumbs up RE: Life in Michigan

Hey PTPPRO welcome to Michigan. The towns of New Hudson and Wixom are on the outskirts of Novi and near South Lyon, Milford and Brighton.

Novi: Very close and has lots to do such as; twelve oaks a two story mall plaza w/department stores and restaurants. Fountain walk, which houses restaurants and indoor skate "park" (skateboarding) glow in the dark putt putt, chuckie cheese, Emagine theater-a multi movie stadium seating complex. Plenty of other shopping right around Twelve oaks and Fountain walk and restaurants-some chain and some not. Bally total fitness and hotels. Also in Novi further away is a Lifetime Fitness Center. There is the Rock Financial Showplace that houses events that come to town like Boat/camper shows, hunting shows, womens fair etc.

Milford/Brighton area: Kensington Metro Park, a 4,481 recreational park. They have golf, disc golf, nature center, picnic areas, birding, kent lake, boating w/rentals, paved hiking-biking trail, fitness trail, fishing, in winter-ice fishing, skating, cross country skiing, sledding and toboggoning. It is fun there. There are other parks too such as Island Lake Recreation. However Kensington is huge, has hilly terrain in areas, great place to spot deer.
Milford and Brighton both have upscale "victorian" or old time towns. Nice restaurants and shopping. Not huge but nice.
There is also Mt. Brighton in Brighton, that has man made ski hills. Ive never been there but everyone says its great for a place to ski close to home.

You would be about 25 minutes depeding on traffic from Livonia, Plymouth and Northville. Livonia has hotels, laurel park shopping center, lots of restaurants and AMC 20 another movie theater complex. Plymouth is a cute little town with a park in the center. Lots of little stores, coffee cafes a nice place to spend the evening from walking around to dining, upper middle class. Northville also has a cute town area, on a more upscale store setting. Northville has quite a few multi million dollar homes.

Ann Arbor is another fun college town with plenty to do and see. About 45 minutes or so is Dearborn MI, home of henry ford Museum and village, the Ford Fairlane house (tours) and historic homes.

I do not know much about Wixom or New Hudson though I have been to both. I do not think either are very large cities, they are experiencing new growth with home/condo building. All of these areas are nice and have good things to offer. Much more than I could possibly put here.
All of the school systems are good. The children around this "area" like to play soccer, swim, basketball, football and of course hockey. There are many programs available in school and community

You will be about 45 minutes give or take depending on traffic and construction from downtown Detroit. I happen to love Detroit. Well, certain areas that are fun and safe. Museums, there are the casinos but there is also Greek Town and Mexicantown. Gre****wn is a street of restaurants and Gre****wn casino, a few hotels some bars and is a hop skip and a jump from the theater section of Detroit which is also right near Ford Field (LIONS) and Comerica Park (TIGERS) not far from Joe Louis where the REDWINGS play. All can be accessed by the people mover, or driving and parking. If you end up in gre****wn and park in the parking structure...make sure you go into the casino (even if you dont gamble) if you want to have your parking stub validated. Cheaper. There is also fine dining in some areas.
Mexicantown is fun to go to for of course Mexican food. Not much to do there besides that. Lots of Mexican restaurants to choose from, it is fun to try them and see which becomes your favorite (Los Galanos-they also have dancing on weekend nights).
Eatern Market area, fun and something to experience. From flowers to fish, nuts, spices, meats, produce...they have it all. A good Thai restaurant is right there too Sala Thai...is right in Eastern Market. Get a GOOD city of Detroit map with details and keep it handy until you get a feel for the city and roads. Map out where you will go, park what streets etc. You will be fine. Highly public areas are well patrolled.

I hope you see this and it helps you a little bit. I know another poster said he/she is in the Flint area. I feel bad because Flint is not (in my opinion and many others) any place to want to live in. Horrible. Not a taste of fun Michigan at all. Your area is a fun area and so are the places nearby. I hope you enjoy your stay.

I live in Wixom and I think it is alright. The schools are pretty good and it is near a lot of malls, restaurants, and things like that. But I don't really like how in Wixom there are at LEAST 20 office buildings that have been empty for a couple of years. They are very annoying. There is a very nice lake nearby, and there is a lot to do. It is a nice place.

I also live in Wixom and I am wondering where those 20 empty office buildings are located?? I've been living here and in Wolverine Lake (4 miles away) for over 25 years and have no idea what you are referring to.

Get into some hockey games! The Detroit Red Wings are legends and you won't be far away. Michigan also has good basketball, football, baseball...so if you are into sports there's a lot for you.

Going up north is a popular past time as mentioned. You can relax, go boating, bon fires, etc.

There is a lot of racial segregation as was also mentioned. But we tend to like that and try to keep it that way. Not to be mean but it's one of the few areas left near a major city where you can live in a highly segregated area. I'm a Detroit area native and have been living in Las Vegas for the last nine years. I can't get used to the racial diversity, it's crazy...most of my neighbors are hispanic. I am moving back to Michigan next month and can't wait for the segregation. I guess it's all a matter of what you are used to.

Basically anything you did where you live now you can probably do in Michigan. There's lots to do!
