Where can I find duplexes in SE Michigan? Located between Detroit and Toledo. The apartments are not hard to find, but I am looking for possible cheaper alternatives in a relatively safe environment. Is there anything on the web or local newspapers that would list these? Thanks.

Realtor.com allows you specifically to search for multi-family dwellings in your desired area and price range. Go immediately to Advanced Search and tap in as many details as you like. Easy peasy.
Yahoo real estate rocks - I use the Real Estate Classifieds on that site - though I can't figure out how to find duplexes (we're looking for one as well). Has foreclosures listed, if you're interested in that. The thing I like best is each page shows numbered listings on the city map, with details for each listing below. If you're familiar with the city, you automatically know which areas are decent and safe, and which to avoid. Craigslist can be fantastic, with reasonable properties offered by nice folks - but you often have to wade through a lot of crap, too. A great Realtor can be such a help in your search - someone who really knows the area, knows exactly what you're looking for, your price range, what you must have and what you won't tolerate. The Realtor I bought my first home through was a SNAKE, and I got taken for quite a ride. The Realtor I'm working with now is a Saint. You have to be careful and selective. Investigate credentials. Get referrals. Ask for a list of satisfied prior customers who would be willing to speak to you. Interview Realtors just as if you were hiring them to work at your company - remember they ARE working for you. Don't sign any committment contracts until you're sure the fit is right.Best of luck! I hope you find exactly what you're looking for. Lynn |

Thanks for the great advice Lynn, I will definitly be more conscious of renting. Hopefully I can find a honest Real Estate agent that can tell me about different areas. Being from Virginia and moving into a place as soon as I cross the Michigan border, I have to rely on faith and hope everything turns out well. The only reference points I have now on safety are contacting the local police departments. Thanks again Lynn.

For a safe place that is very cool and has a lot of 2 famiiy houses I would go with Monroe MI or Dundee. Prices are good, lots available and nice area 1/2 way between Toledo and Detroit. Also Trenton MI has a lot of 2 familes. Try the monroeeveningnews.com for listings. Diane
