Or they read your cheerleading for the UP and get disappointed when they realize the streets aren't paved with gold.

Your location says "Huntington Woods".

Are there any places you could critique that are less than six hours away? I always see you posting about the northern part of the state. There are plenty of things to be negative about within a 20-mile radius of Huntington Woods. Might be worth a try if you are looking for some variety to spice things up.

Perhaps you should go into the Detroit forum as I post in there as well. Not sure what you are going for here. I used to live in northern Michigan so i feel I'm just as qualified to critique as the weekend warriors who spend their weekends there.

I really love the UP. It reminds me of a more civilized Northern Ontario.

Anyways, People who love the U.P outnumber the people who dont very easily. Ask 100 people who have been there if they liked it, 98% will tell you yes. Like I said...They were most likely all your posts they are talking about.

I've met more people that have not been there than have, so maybe that is the disconnect (avoidance) your asking about? Many downstater's find the drive too long, and like the relatively short drive up to Gaylord, Grand Traverse, etc. Many make a day trip to Mackinaw with St. Ignace being the farthest north they travel.

It all depends on how far downstate they live. Where I live (near chesaning) its not that bad to drive to the UP, (3.5 hours to bridge) and most people around here have been to the UP many times. If you live all way down state even a trip to St Ignace is a journey. From Monroe or Three Rivers for example im betting the bridge is at least 6 hours. Metro Detroit is at least 5 hours from the bridge. Anywhere south of Flint or Grand Rapids is very removed from the UP, and you would need longer than just a weekend to enjoy it, as your looking at about 12 hours of travel time (there and back) just to make the trip. I agree with you though, very rare to hear someone who truly dislikes the UP, almost everyone enjoys visiting there but not all are cut out to live there.

I think a lot depends on when, where and why a person went to the UP whether thay liked it, loved it or hated it.

Those forced to go with parents in the early spring to fish for trout with a parent or a husband would hate it for the early season bugs.

Those who only want to snomobile short distances before stopping at a bar or resturant would hate it.

Those forced to go to Iron wood to snomobile then went to Cadillac would hate it.

The UP is for those who like the outdoors and not running in to hundreds of people every day.

I developed a strong disliking of Maine even though the country is a lot like the UP. It wass the closed resturants that did it. I'm on a vacation I want to eat when I am ready not when you want to open your resturant.

Good evening. A quick question for all the U.P. lovers and/or residents. How does Drummond Island area compare to the western part of the U.P.? Lake Superior side? I am from Chicago and have been to the U.P. only once two years ago to Drummond Island. I have yet to see a more beautiful place in this country. Truly spectacular. However, my buddy swears by the Lake Superior side. He says it is more beautiful. He wants to retire to Ironwood. I am just asking because we were planning another U.P. trip this fall, wanted to go back to the Lake Huron side, but might go to the Superior side if it's worth it.

Cheers.
