Default Soul Food

I'm just wondering, since my niece had to torture me with talking about Roscoe's on FB... There must be decent soul food in this state somewhere, right? Because my Grandfather's family is from Tuscaloosa and NOLA. And I grew up urban poor in LA. So... Before I drown in a river of my own saliva.... Or start cooking all this stuff I miss because it's not terribly healthy and die of a heart attack at 42, please tell me I do not have to drive the 3 hours to Detroit to get great soul food?

There has to be some good soul food a little further northwest than the Big City, isn't there? Please? If not, maybe y'all can just come help me eat the stuff. I want to live long enough to enjoy Michigan, but wow... this winter weather makes some nice hot smothered pork chops sound REALLY good. And greens. And cornbread. Oh lordy, here I go again....

Blast my Southern roots....

Ive never actually seen a soul food restauraunt in Michigan. I bet you could find it in Detroit or GR though. I just dont go to cities often. One suggestion is Famous Daves, its not soul food but its southern BBQ. They have one in Saginaw and its pretty good.

I live near Ferris State, but will travel. It's dangerous to cook that stuff, because you do not need leftovers. One meal of it is enough without a Cardiologist in the family.

I wouldn't mind going toward Detroit, but 3-4 hours one way is a LOOOONG way to drive for a meal. But if we head out that way to see the sights sometime, at least I'll know where to go....

If you're near Ferris, you're only an hour and half or so from Grand Rapids. There are a few here on and around Wealthy Street and on Division Ave. Sandmann's (http://www.sandmanns.com/ - broken link) is great. Jamaican Dave's. So is Chez Olga in Eastown.

I go to GR 2-3 times a month, May be going several times a week once we get back into rehabilitation services again. Nothing like a nice, fattening lunch after the PTs and OTs torture you for a few hours!

Thanks Magellan.
