That's a Southern California thing. Northern California doesn't use "the" either. i.e. it's the 5 and the 10 in LA, but it's 5 and 80 in Sacramento.

Coney dogs / Coney Islands: They exist almost everywhere north of the Mason-Dixon and east of the Mississippi. SE Michigan ones are unique though - probably due to the Greek influence, most good / historically popular ones are Greek owned.

I know what you mean! We also call it a Michigan turn around.

This is a great post. I can't believe it's captured my attention to read all 19 pages! LOL
I'm a Michigander currently in San Diego but anyway, what about locals in Traverse City calling the tourists "fudgies?" I don't know maybe it was my young cousins telling me that when I was a kid visiting them because now that I really think about it - TC wasn't known really for their fudge but rather Mackinac Island was. Does anyone else have comment about this?

I love the term fudgie

Kind of related is the Yooper term for a downstater which is a troll.

Tehy had a Macinac Island Fudge booth at the auto show. I bought some fudge for my son and asked the gal there whether buying findge from her made me a "Fudgie" evenou though I was in Detroit.

She said "absolutely"

I was not even wearing a Hawaiin shirt.

I always thought "fudgie" was a Mackinac island tourist, Traverse city to me is cherries, and petosky stones, not fudge. I'm a former San Diegan currently living in MI, I actually grew up in MI but lived in San Diego for many years.

I guess I'm the irritating downstater who always makes sure to get fudge when I'm up north... even if it's Traverse City or Petosky!

"doorwall" is the brand name of the sliding glass doors made by Wallside Window Company in Taylor. Much like Kleenex, it has been adopted in the Detroit metro area as the generic term.

I've always used that term "close in here" never realizing it was a regionalism. My grandparents were from PA, and my husband's father was from PA, we both use that term---maybe that's what brought us together---a mutual dialect

Anyone call a sofa a davenport? I understood it was either an old Victorian term, or a Canadian name. Regardless, everyone knew what you were talking about.
