They opened one up in Chicago; it is doing famously.

No surprise though, they like their dogs in the Windy City.

The large thing we sit upon in the family room is a couch. Not a sofa or a davenport. Who ever heard of a davenport potato?

And, I never go to Meijers. It's Meijer.

Another thing that used to bug me was when people went to "the show" on Saturday, I always said "to the movies."
We totally go to the show. And I think that they go to the show here in OH too.

It is, or used to be, Meijer's (Meijer's Grocery and then Meijer's Thrifty Acres later) and a lot of old ads and pictures show the "s" on the buildings. Did anyone else ever refer to it as "Shifty Acres" when they were growing up, kind of like McDonald's is called Mickey D's?

Vacuum cleaner was often called a sweeper, although my mom was in the habit of calling it a hoover, regardless of the actual brand.

Patio door or sliding door, never heard of a door wall.

Couch or davenport. I was grown before I realized that thing in my bedroom was not really called a "chester drawer".

Party store makes perfect sense to me, after all if you have a grown up party you need drinks. Convenience store to me is the place you run into to get a bottle of coke, a candy bar, or a six pack, not where you go to stock up on alcohol.
But either one of those makes a whole lot more sense than the first time in the south someone told me they were going to the ABC store. Huh?!!

That is true about Meijer! I forgot that.

Chester drawer! Funny...lmao!

Convenience store makes me think of 7-11.

You are 100% correct that Meijer used to be Meijer's. i was wondering when they dropped the "S" when I moved back several years ago after being out of state for quite some time.

The accent in southeast Mi is slightly different from the rest of the state. I was told by someone in metro Detroit once that I have an "up north" accent. Ive lived in the eastern UP and western Mi, and currently central Mi, and never noticed a huge accent difference between those places. Metro Detroit is different though because that is the part of the state most heavily influenced by southerners during the auto boom in the 1900s. Oh and I think its funny that you believe CMU (Mt Pleasant) is "up north". Ive also heard Detroit area people call Birch Run/Frankenmuth area up north as well. Since I live in the mid state area I dont see this area as being up north, but I suppose if you live 100 miles downstate from here it may be to you. Its all a matter of perspective.

I have heard the term "doorwall" but rarely, and I always thought it meant the frame around the door.

I have lived in Michigan now over 20 years. Some of the terms that confused me initially (and I stll chuckle at) are;

Party Store = Convenience store. I thought they were talking about a store like Party City that sold balloons, paper plates and cups, gag gifts, etc.

Buggy = Shopping cart. I still cringe at this one.

Up North = Northern Michigan. They say it like it is a specific location. "I am going up north this weekend." I thought they were talking about Canada the first few times I heard it. LOL

Coney Island = A greasy spoon, diner kind of restaurant. Also a hot dog with all sorts of nasty stuff piled on it. I just don't get this one at all. I thought Coney Island was an amusement park in NY or NJ.

"Cheese Coneys" are well known in the Cincinnati, Ohio area because of the Cincinnati chili restaurants - Skyline and Gold Star.

They do thrive in Cincinnati, Ohio.
