I'd also like to know specific spots along the Au Sable, pretty please.

Detroit's Eastern Market. (And on a smaller scale but still really cool, Flint's year-round farmers market.)

Sleeping Bear Dunes for sure!!

The beaches along the lake in Harrison, Oscoda, and points in between.

I don't live that far from Frankenmuth and think "sorta cheesy" about that town. Plus the surrounding areas are so flat and windy...meh.

Its all beautiful, but there are very nice spots along the scenic byway. Also a stop at "Rollaways" is always a good time. Here is the website with lots of good stuff.
River Road Scenic Byway

So I'm traveling up to Traverse City but am now curious about Frankenmuth. Should I take a short detour here? What's there to see in particular?

Its a neat place especially around Christmas, but I dont think I would detour from your TC route. I myself would rather spend that time up in the TC area this time of year.

I loved taking the day up to Charlevoix in the fall, the skies were spectacular. A no-talent, point and shoot photographers dream.

Driving up to Lelanau and the peninsula is incredible... Reminds me of some of what I love most about Seattle.... I want a house there someday.

I liked taking the kids to Ludington, liked walking out to the lighthouse. That's pretty awesome.
