Newt says michigan loosing jobs and people
I was watching face the nation sunday. and newt says that michigan is going down a bad slope.
He said that michigan was loosing the most jobs in the nation, and that detroit went from a population of 1.2 mil. to 900k and loosing more.
And how many jobs have left michigan.
It is depressing on the michigan situation.
No one seems to have much hope for michigans future.
I recomend all those of you thinking of moving to michigan rethink if very carfully.

I find it hard to argue with facts.... And, the facts are that Michigan is in a huge economic slump, and it will likely only get worse before it gets better. I love my home (Michigan), but went TWO YEARS after college with no job. I finally got a job, but it is in North Carolina. The economy is so strong in the Charlotte area, that they are renting apartments over two months before they are vacated! In my town, there was recently an apartment building that caught on fire. It affected 24 apartments: 17 were vacant.
Do I want to leave? No! But, working 75 hours a week to pay student loans is no way to live.

I agree, I can not find anyone who thinks michigan is doing fine. or even going to be ok.
This state is going down as is the whole country, but much much faster.
I do not see anything that will bring the state back. Also I see GM posted a third gain, but this is on paper only, just like the rise in the stock market the republicans tout as a "great economy" On paper. GM is only doing this by laying off people and cutting production, not a long term business plan.
I remember this in the eightys and it took ten years of turn around for the economy and 90 cent a gallon gas to get us up and running again. I do not see gas doing anything but holding or going up, Bush cheany are nothing but big oil puppets.
We have at least till jan. 09 before any real change can start. So hold on to you butts. We have a long bumpy ride with W in charge. Remember fool me once........ shame on......... fool me......... You cant get fooled again.
I can not believe I voted for this idiot, Now I know what the people who voted for Nixon felt like.

Wow, what a collection of SHOCKING revelations. I wonder how many long, arduous hours it took for him to bring these facts to light.
Somewhere...a dead horse is being beaten.

Most of y'all are newbies to the forum...
My husband and I still own property in MI altho we now live in NC because we found a job there. Could not find work in MI. And my health likes warm better than cold.
But rather than beating the dead horse, come up with solutions to the problem.
And I don't see the entire country going down...not with record growth in the job sector, esp in the south. The stock market is doing great overall. Yes, the housing market sucks pond water but some areas are starting to see a recovery, and interest rates are still great.
Yes, gas is sky high to what we we paid back in the 70's/80's but you know, we are finally catching up to the rest of the world where gas is expensive. Example, the UK back in May, a friend posted that her prices were

which i think works out at about $1.99 a litre so that would be approx $8.95 a gallon!!

and WE are yelling about $3+ a gallon????? She wanted a secret pipeline from us to HER!!!!!
Imagine if other commodities were charged by the gallon like gas??? Check the price of the soda you are drinking per ounce. Was that soda $1.00 for the bottle and it's probably a 20 ounce. It takes 6.4 of those bottles to make one gallon. Which makes that soda worth $6.40 a gallon. Slightly more expensive than a gallon of gas but no one is yelling about the soda gouging.
Rather than moan and groan about how everything is so bad, find ways to pick yourselves up. Quit being whiners. Liz

Well said. I've lived in MI all my life, and it just boils down to deciding for yourself if the postives about living here outweigh the negatives. For us, they do. As for the problems, we simply realize that to stay here, sometimes we have to get creative with the resources that are available. What is that saying... "necessity is the mother of invention"? Well, it's true. We had considered moving out of MI, and still may someday. But right now, we'd rather stay.

AGREED! People have no clue how bad their negative thoughts are in reality. Every negative thought resonates with every other, bringing the collective down a notch.
Enough already!

That'sthe dumbest comparison I've seen in awhile.
Do you even KNOW how the British economic system works? Their taxes are completely different, their utilities are different, their health care system is different, their money is worth more vs. the US dollar, their job market is different, their transportation infrastructure is different, etc.!!!!!!
Keep in mind that UK is significantly smaller than the US - because they do not go through as much oil as we do, they do not get as good of rates because their consumption is much lower!
As for why other commodities haven't skyrocketed like gas? Because you don't need SODA to get to and from work. You don't need PAPER TOWELS to get you to work to pay your utility bills. etc.... Gas has gone up because our government and even state officials have allowed big business to bend us over and force us to take whatever price they want. There is no excuse for $3.50+ a gallon when in 1999 you could get it for $.99 gallon. In '99 gas alone for a tank of 15 gallons once a week costs a person $780 annually. Now, at 3.50/gallon for the same amounts, people pay $2,730 annually. How many people do you know use only 15 gallons a week in gas? So if you have a van, truck, SUV, double or triple that amount. Also consider that housing costs have skyrocketed way beyond inflation levels. for the US dollar.
Do you honestly believe that people in Michigan should be happy when not only are their jobs in constant danger of being phased out but that they also are probably making the same amount as they did 7/8 years ago yet they are spending out $3000+ more annually AFTER TAXES!?!?! ...and that's a LOW ESTIMATE!
You really need to rethink your reasoning process and posts like this scare me because if you don't have a problem with Michigan, it's probably because you have a fairly decent paying/stable job.
And if this is the type of folk who CAN find work in Michigan that either means there are tons of dumber people out there and that's why unemployment is so high (or more realistically) this state is full of idiotic business owners who hire idiots to work for them and then wonder why everyone with half a brain decides to leave the state.
Wanna hear something bad? When I graduated college and needed a part-time temporrary job during the winter before I had landed a job in my field, I couldn't even GET A JOB AT WALMART. WALMART. WALMART!!!!
That's why Michigan is F^&*#d UP!
