My husband is being transferred to work in Pontiac. We currently live in tampa fl and don't know the first thing about Michigan. We have a two year old daughter and another on the way. Looking for a nice neighborhood to rent a SFH with shopping and restaurants close by. Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

Working in Pontiac is ok, living there is probably not the best idea?

Look at Auburn Hills area, Waterford, and areas north of Pontiac.
Housing Budget?

How far / long is he willing to commute?

That's is exactly what I keep reading and hearing - steer clear of Pontiac. We will need to rent first max $1300/ month then maybe purchase in a year. He is willing to drive up to 45min

You should know that the City of Pontiac itself is a ghetto with everything that comes with it, crime, bad schools, etc. It's weird because Pontiac is surrounded by solid middle class cities and even upper middle class (West Bloomfield) and upper class areas (Bloomfield Hills). Think of it as a little piece of Detroit in Oakland County.

The good news is that you'll have numerous and abundant housing options in safe middle class areas. If you're looking to buy a house you'll probably be stunned by how much house you can purchase for your money here (though this probably doesn't apply to Bloomfield Hills).

Areas you might want to look at are Troy, Rochester, Waterford, West Bloomfield, Auburn Hills.

Seems to me that since your little ones won't be ready for school for a few years, it won't be a big deal to take advantage of cheap Pontiac rents initially since you won't have kids in the schools. You can save a bit more and get a feel for the area and where you want to settle in.

Up to $1300 will rent you a pretty nice house! Also look to Clarkston, Holly, even Grand Blanc. Those towns are very nice and unless there's horrendous weather or construction slow-downs, still well within your 45 minute commute.

Even with no children I would not want to live in Pontiac. It is not a safe area. For 1300 a month you could rent a condo in Bloomfield Hills or West Bloomfield both very upscale and safe areas with a short commute to your husband's work. For less you could rent a nice apartment with a garage even. Both areas are near shopping, restaurants, movies. I grew up in the area and think it is very nice. Though farther you could also look into Birmingham which has a cute downtown with shops and restaurants. All 3 cities I stated have excellent school systems for when your children do go to school.

You're going to want to avoid Pontiac at all costs. I live in Detroit, and driving through Pontiac still bothers me.

YouTube - ‪Pontiac, MI‬‏

But, you can go just a few blocks outside of Pontiac, to Auburn Hills or West Bloomfield and be perfectly safe with an affordable home in a solid neighborhood. But, my personal recommendation would be Troy, MI. Living here allows you to rent or buy a nice home in a good neighborhood with good schools, and a 15-minute drive up I-75 puts you right in the heart of Pontiac.

Hey that looks like Flint.

I lived in Flint for six years (east side) so perhaps I've been numbed to ruin porn and crime. Heh. Didn't bother me and the vast majority of people who live in high crime/notorious for blight cities have no problems at all. That said, I don't know Pontiac well - I imagine it's like Flint, mostly fairly crappy but some better neighborhoods? One thing I liked about Flint was the grass-roots neighborhood activism and community, if you lived in the right neighborhood and chose to get involved.

I guess my thinking was, if the OP wanted to save up some money to buy a house in a better area, living in Pontiac and renting a cheaper house might not be a bad idea, temporarily.
