Subruban town (no downtown...that's Kalamazoo right next door), great schools, wide variety of housing prices from cheap bungalows to lakefront mansions.

Shares a border with Kalamazoo which is the original city (Portage was basically a suburb of Kzoo for years and years but now probably has more economy than it's neighbor to the north).

Portage is a great place, look at Texas Township if you want even more suburbia....you still can have Portage schools but be further away from the traffic.

If you're working in Portage you'll also be within 10 minutes commute of the internationally famous Kalamazoo Promise. If your kids go to school for all 12 years in Kalamazoo college tuition is free anywhere in the state for four years. There are great neighborhoods in Kzoo too... check out Winchell and Bronson Blvd. neighborhoods (any realtor can show you around).
