Talking Hillsdale, MI

Hello everyone, I am trying to find out some information about Hillsdale, MI. My family and I are currently living in KY and are planning to move to MI within the next few months. I have never been out of KY and am unsure of what to expect when we move. I also would like to ask if anyone is in this area, maybe give me some idea about jobs, utility bills, rent, schools, etc. It would be greatly appreciated

Thank you,
Heaven

Small college town surrounded by miles and miles of farms. Good sized Amish population just outside of town. Not much to do there. Downtown has had its ups and downs. Altogether fairly a nice place, but if you're looking for excitement, move along... :-)

Depending on where in KY you are, Hillsdale will not be much of a change..

Do a search and you will find several posts describing the "death" of Hillsdale. It was a very nice retreat for folks from metro Detroit. It was a great place for hunting a few years back. But the economy fell and Hillsdale became commuity non-grata.

Hillsdale: The Town I loved, the Town that Died

It is stil a very nice area, but there isn't much as far as work goes. There might be work in Adrian?

If you move, have employment or 1-2 years income in the bank.

Hilldale college seems to be doing well. It is a beautiful campus and the college is well known because it accepts no federal money and therefore is not subject to governmental regulations on their curriculum. As a result it is one of the few non-liberal colleges in the country. Their newsletter ("Imprimis?" I cannto remember the name). Is highly regarded and often quoted by conservative leaders (unfortunately including Rush Limbaugh - Hillsdale i snot THAT conservative).

It woudl be neat to live there if you worked for the College. Otherwise as mentioned, jobs are scarce, people are leaving. It is still a cute town, but there is not so much there as there was. It is not close to anything, but there are some very nice lakes int eh area.

Besides Hillsdale College there is nothing unique there. Keep moving, or if your look for popular isolated small twons you need to look near the great lakes ( specifically Lake Michigan and Superior) or just north.

One thing that sets Hillsdale apart from other U.S. cities is the people. White people total 96% of the population. The minorities who live here and attend the Hillsdale college are welcomed as are their culteral and ethnic differences. The Hillsdale College Newpaper is calle the "Collegiate" I think!!! There is not enough for the adolescent children to do in the summer unless they pay for entertainment or stay home. There is a fantastic family resturaunt in town called The Finish Line with the best Ice-Cream Sundaes in Hillsdale and they serve breakfast all day. Community support is difficult to attain so if moving here without a job, I would also recomend a decent savings to live from until employment is attained.
