I remember back in the 60's a good percentage of families in Michigan(mostly in the Mid to Northern part) were self sufficient and were able to survive on what they grow, with some exeptions.
In other words, they were self employed on their own farms, that is until Corperate farming came along.

I remember when this happend in the late 70s and it only turned around because of the auto industry making a come back, I dont see this happning again. Japan gave us a chance and we blew it on greed.
Detroit can not get it through their thick heads that big h2s and yukons are not going to sell.
Toyota and hybreads are where it is at. or alt. energy source cars.
I think between the greed of the auto industry and short sitedness and the greed of the unions they have worked togeather to kill the indsutry, while one was holding the spike the other was driving it in the coffin. And at the same time china and japan have ran past the us auto industry.
Coupled with a war gone bad, a dropping dollar, and a weak economy and getting worse it lookes bad for the whole country but michigan will lead the pack for the pain felt.
I know of some people who are hoping to buy a home cheap and have it turn around in the next year. I personaly do not think michigan can turn around in one year. I think it is going to be several years of hurt even if things were done now to start MI on the right path, it would take 3 to 4 years to turn it around, and this is if the whole economy does not flush.
Things are not looking good, and all the pundits that said things were not going to go into ressission are now saying not a bad ressission.
I dont see bottom yet.

You make a good review of the conditions here in Michigan. I agree the bottom is not here yet. Strange thing , in my area of SW Mi., prices are holding. Its hard to find , on the surface , the recession . We depend so much on the Chicago market. When N. Il. goes down , so will we , hard ! Most of us are just doing that , holding on. This winter , will tell a lot , stay tuned......

You are......South Haven , a little sleepy resort community, on the shore of Lake Michigan. In its heyday, this area was hot , as a resort haven, for Il. folks. Now , all the big money has moved north. The locals are banking on the energy crunch to bring back the good old days.
Many Il. and n. In.folks have summer places here, not only on the big water , but more so on the many small lakes in the area..... I am one such , just finished a five year project 60s designer home, and , am waiting for a buyer. Holding me up big time, as I am building in the UP , my retirement bunker...........

Right now I am stuck in the armpit of the world (Northern Maine) but was born and raised in Scottville (Over by Ludington), Graduated from Sault Ste. Marie, and lived in McBain (extra points if you know where that is) for a couple of years. Lived in Gaylord for a few years after school, and also worked in Battle Creek for a time. My family and I are looking forward to getting back home to West Michigan next fall as soon as work contracts are up out here. Just spent almost a month in pure heaven back in Scottville, and cannot wait to get back to friends and family in the area.
