A major reason for this is because Michigan doesn't have a major media market overall anymore.

There's going to be a lot of rationing over the next few decades as the state's population corrects itself (downward).

People aren't going to invest their time and money in areas that are small and/or shrinking.

Nothing New to us in Texas, my wife was laid off 2 yrs ago from the Fort Worth Star-Telegram (the local paper). Luckily TX has not been hit as hard by the Economic Down turn. She was able to pick up a job in short order with a Mortgage Company. Good Luck to all of those who are being laid off, hopefully they will be able to pick up another job soon.

I've been used to getting news online since 2003. I don't like the mess papers make with the clutter and the ink on the hands.

I have a hard time believing that people today spend as much time reading news on the internet as people used to spend reading the paper. I think it has more to do with the dumbing-down of America. We're becoming more illiterate, less educated, shorter attention spans, more interest in sleaze than substance. Just look how the political debate as degenerated to sound bites, blunders, and trivial issues.

The papers here in GR don't have that kind of ink anymore.

My problem with the printed version of the GR Press is that much of the news in it is not local. It's all culled from Associated Press. I'm sure that's due to declining ad revenues and having fewer resources.

I find it sad that we are loosing a lot of printed material. Newspapers, books, magazines are all going toward digital. Something about holding a newspaper or book just, well, feels better to me. Maybe I'm a bit old school, even if I am an MIS tech, but I just like paper better.

As bad as things are, I think Michigan is still one of the best states for newspaper readership. This article is from a couple of years ago, but we were already in the midst of the horrible downturn. It says that Michigan is far above the national average:
