We here near Lake Superior do not have the cold, even on a bad day. What we are used to is huge amounts of snow, This is the second year since i moved up here that the Coast Guard Ice breaker did not come around at the near end of winter. Right now its snowing big flakes and its only 6 degrees, I guess its lake effect in action.

Sux 'cuz the ice cover helps to not lose your water levels.

Big flakes mean that you're not gonna get heavy snow THIS time.

Make a snow man.

Snow fort.

Snow angel.

Then cap it all off with a good 'ole fashioned snowball fight.

A lot of time the memories of snow as a kid tend to be greatly embellished. Ive noticed that before. Detroit, Flint, and Saginaw saw way more snow from 2007-08 through 2010-11 than they had ever seen in a 4-year stretch before, at least since weather records started in the 1800s.

Careful what you wish for...

I've spent a lot of this weekend shoveling. I'm not one to complain about winter too much, but I could use a nice summer day right about now!

I know a lot of people moving here ask about lake-effect snow. This map of the recent snowfall looks to be about where I think of the lake-effect line. We have maybe 3 or 4 inches on the ground here in the Northeast Grand Rapids area (where the color goes from blue to green).

We don't have much snow at all here in Iron Mountain, but its 8 below and plenty cold- thank heavens the wind isn't blowing much, because it has a tendency to go right through everything you're wearing when it does!

The cold spell here in the UP is not the norm, especially if you are near lake Superior. Inland city's and towns, like Iron Mtn. is always colder.
On Jan. 21, 2013 we had the honor of recording the coldest daily high since records have been kept ( 1961 ). The high was -3 which tied the record in 1963. I have lived up here for five years and this is the coldest I have seen.
