I agree with Marylee regarding Detroit. A ball game may be nice, but Detroit is not. Some nice places not to miss in Michigan would be Frankenmuth (really interesting German culture here), Traverse City, Sleeping bear dunes, Mackinaw city, then take US-2 along lake Michigan (lots of nice beach area west of St Ignace). Taquanamen falls are a nice place to see, as is whitefish point and its shipwreck museum. Visit Marquette (nicest scenery of any Michigan city), then head to the Porcupine Mountain state park. I know that I gave you alot of suggestions to sort through, but those are the nicest places to see in this state before you cross into Wisconsin. If you decide not to visit upper Michigan, then take the car ferrry Bager across Lake Michigan (ludington to Manitowoc) it is a very nice ride. Ill say again that time spent in Detroit is time wasted, so many truly nice things to see in this state why waste time in a dead city. Have fun and good luck planning your trip.

In wisconsin, there is a silly little town known as Troll Town and just West of there a neat cave that you cna tour. The Dells are pretty neat real touristy though, but you can still find something to please anyone.

IN Minnesota skip the big mall. It is just a big mall. Not interesting at all. Even my kids found it boring.

Michgan Staples:

Monroe: Raisin river battlefield museum and George Custer House.

Greenfield Villiage and Henry Ford - this needs a day or two to really take it all in.

Detroit: Detroit INstute of arts (world class art museum). Eat at Slows. Wander around the Ren Cen and get a drink at Coach INsignia for the view. See a theatrical show and/or a sporting event. Visit the casinos. Sometimes you cna play Tic Tac toe against a Chicken at Greektown Casino. Greektown is neat. Eastern MArket on a Saturday mOrning is neat.

Detroit Zoo Not a bad zoo, some really neat things here.

Frankenmuth. (I find it pretty boring, but there is a huge chrstmas store, a place famous for mediochre broasted chicken and some other tourist attractions) You cna buy some fine GermanLeipzig lace from my sister in law if she is there for a festival!

There is another casino resort in midland (Soaring Eagle) if you are not bored of casino by then.

North: Pictured Rocks, Leelanua/Traverse City; Taquanamenon Falls. Machinac Island (at least one full day). Blueberry festival in that city that your drive through to get to Taquamenon (Paradise maybe?). Sault St. Marie. Sleeping Bear dunes or Silver lake Dunes.

Oddball stuff:

Visit Hell and get some ice scream - bring a picnic or go canoeing. Otherwise Hell is pretty boring. Road trip from Paradise to hell just to say you did it.

Ann Arbor - A city very close to hell with a large and lively University.

Colon Michgan has one of the largest Magic factories (abbots) in the world. They ahve an annaul magician convention in august. If oyu are crass, you can tell your friends that you visited Michigan's Colon.

Shishiwana Indiana just minutes from the Michgan border is a cheezy amish tourist town. It is still pretty neat and when you get outside of town there are some really neat shops, particulary wood working items and quilts. THe main resturaunt in town has fabulous food it really is worth the wait. Remember nothing is open on Sunday and everything shuts down around 5 p.m. (Earlier on Saturday).

Any lake Michigan Beach or beach town is worth visiting. I really like South Haven.

Marshall Michigan - nothing special just a really quaint turn of the century town with tns of beautiful homes.

Chelsea - near ann arbor, aother quaint town with a small theater owned and run by Jeff Bridges (someone correct me if I have the wrong guy).

What is that island where there are wild wolves? I cannot think of the name. Never been there, but I want to.

Boyne Mountain is a neat area even i the spring and summer.

I've heard they have a pretty cool (though expensive) aquarium with sharks there. I suppose The Toledo zoo would be cheaper though, as they have sharks as well.

You are probably thinking of Isle Royale, near the north end of Lake Superior. The whole UP has wild wolves in it now, though.

I'd say your list is pretty nice and comprehensive. Many members have exclusively suggested places in the North and the UP, but as someone who has lived in the UP most of his life I have to say the north is great, but you can't experience Michigan without checking out Southeast Michigan. It is were the majority of Michiganders live, after all.

I really like the Detroit zoo. They have a lot of great cageless exhibits, including the new all glass lion exhibit. You can really get up close and personal with them!

Another great exhibit at the zoo is the Arctic Ring of life, the world's largest polar bear exhibit. They have a tunnel you can walk under and watch the polar bear swim above you. It is also very cool in the summertime!

The campus itself is very nice, well worth a visit.
I took some pictures which you can look at here University of Michigan - a set on Flickr (http://www.flickr.com/photos/aeverett55/sets/72157629485134357/ - broken link). Keep in mind that this is late February early March, if you are visiting in May it will be much less sparse.

If you are looking for something unique to Michigan you should check out the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn. The Detroit Zoo in Royal Oak is also very nice, pictures of which you can find here Detroit Zoo - a set on Flickr (http://www.flickr.com/photos/aeverett55/sets/72157627555157711/ - broken link) .
I don't know if you are planning on going all the way up to Michigan's Upper Peninsula, but there are some unique small towns here, such as my hometown of Sault Ste. Marie. Sault Ste. Marie is the oldest city in Michigan, founded in 1668; there are many old and historic buildings here. Sault Ste. Marie is home to the Sault locks, which allow passage between Lake Huron and Lake Superior. Many tourists come here every summer to see the locks, take boat tours and gamble at the Casino run by the Chippewa Indians.

Hey. Your first pictures shows my first room! Neat. I love that building. What is also neat is that it just does not change. I left there in 1988. It is still the same. I liek whn things stay the same sometimes (I guess that means I am old now).

Oh. If you can afford it, plan to take the Ferry frm Michigan to Wisconsin. It is rpetty neat. It is expensive, but you can avoid going through Chicago that way (unless you want to go through Chicago).

Spend some time in Milwaulkee. It is pretty neat to just walk around. Lunch suggestion - Rocky Bottom - right on the river. Good food. Right downtown.

Went ot he zoo on Wednesday. It was nice. the Plar bears were all outside. Gorillas appeared to be away on vacation. The Tiger was either bored or hungry and told us all about it when we approached. Lions were sleeping. Our favorites were the Giraffe exhibit and the Kagaroos and Wallabies that you walk right thorugh their pen. No fence, no wall. You are right in there with them. Neat!

They ahve a pretty neat amphibian exhibit right now. Penguine house was smelly but really neat. They are fun to watch. Otters too.

I am a bit spoiled having lived near San Diego Zoo for almost 20 years. But compared to many other mumiciapl zoos, Detroit is a good one.

I remember saving up Jiffy Peanut butter tops to give tot eh zoo when I was a kid. It made me happy becuase Jiffy was much better peanut butter but too expensive. Mom let us get it to give th tops to the zoo so we got better p[eanut butter and we got to go to the zoo too!. BAck then it was no where near as nice as now. It was smelly and sad. The animals looked miserable. Now they look happy.
