Ironwood, Michigan
Does anyone know what life is like in Ironwood, MI? I can't seem to find any real estate info on this area. I'm assuming it's because it's pretty remote. Thanks.

Hi. I don't know what life is like there.....we just moved to the U.P. ourselves. The one real estate co. website that comes to mind for the Ironwood/Bessemer/Wakefield/etc. area is Silver Properties. I dunno if I can put a link for it here so, just do a search for it and it should be your first one. Take care.

Thanks Torrid I'll check it out. I love the UP but was a little discouraged trying to find real estate options for the area.

You're very welcome. We've spoken with Joe Barbera, he seems very nice. There's a lot of really nice houses, for dirt cheap there. I've heard the cost of housing may increase next year due to a Wal-Mart going in. It's hearsay so, I dunno for fact. Good luck in your search.

Ironwood resident
My husband & I have lived in Ironwood for the last 30 years. I would be happy to answer any questions I can. My husband is in construction & I am a hair stylist. We are actually trying to put our house on the market & move to S Carolina because construction is very slow & seasonal here. But, it is a beautiful area with lots of clean beautiful lakes, skiing, snowmobiling, four whell trails etc..If you don't mind the snow & are a teacher or in the medical field or have some kind of job you can do from home you could make it here! Poulation is somewhere around 6000 but there was just an article in the Daily Globe that said they count households - not individuals. The new census scheduled for 2010 will count heads ! Housing is very reasonable compared to rest of the country but most of the homes are older although there are some beautiful new ones. There is a new super Walmart going up right now - it's supposed to be ready by Jan. 2008. New Walgreen's, talk of a Culver's & a Kohls but not sure on those, Any way, if you have specific questions I will try to answer but be patient since I work & don't get on here every day. Good luck to everyone checking out the area !

Thanks. It's nice to hear from someone who's been up there for such a long time. I need to know if there are houses to rent or if the only option would be the apartments. The job I would be doing is one where I work a week then have two weeks off and return to my home in Southwest Michigan. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks for any help.

rentals
Josetjo, There are lots of houses for rent here. Average rent is around $450 a month for a 2/3 bdrm. Most of the houses for rent do not include utilities so you have to think about that for the winter months. Heating costs can hit 3-400 a month. Make sure you have a garage ! Also a house with a basement. We heat with wood which we cut on our 40 acres & have gas furnace for backup. It cost us about $ 500 a winter to fill LP tank. This can be a real savings if you can find a place in the country. I'm not sure I can put this on here but try Kathy Richards Management for rentals. Also some of the links in one of the posts above should be helpful - Daily Globe etc.. Hope this helps & good luck.

Info about Ironwood Michigan
Ironwood is great! I have lived here for about 11 years. It is a small town with lots of wonderful things nearby - waterfalls, tons of forest land, close to Lake Superior, plenty of wildlife. In the winter there are 4 major ski hills and 2 cross country ski trails.
Ironwood is not the place to come if you have an aversion to snow however - we average about 250 inches of snow per year.
Local real estate companies include Silver Properties, Snow Country Real Estate, and Faith Richards.
