I got stuck behind a freight train yesterday, and the only thing on the train was wind turbine blades (looked to be about 75-100 foot long) the hubs and the main body that sits on top of the tower. They were headed north through Grand Rapids. It looked like they had enough parts to make about twenty or more of these things. Is there a company in Michigan that produces these, or is there a big wind project going on?

I have heard about a couple of wind farms that are supposedly going to be built between Grand Rapids and Lansing. One in Ionia County, one in Eaton County.

I think the CSX railroad goes north into Grand Rapids, and then turns east and goes through Ionia and Eaton counties on the way to Lansing.

Just a theory.

There is a company in Holland, MI which manufacturers the blades and nacelles (the hub with the turbine in it.)

They are Energetex Composites and are an offshoot of Tiara Yachts. When the boat business stalled, all those fiberglass techs needed to mold something, and this came along at just the right time. Smart company!!!

There's some made in Chicago and shipped into Michigan. From what I've read there's supposedly wind farms going up all over the state.

I saw a lot of wind turbine parts stored in Ludington, on the south side of town, near the old chemical plant.

Yep, probably coming to my area. Consumers Power has a big wind project going right now, there will be around 60 of them put up this Summer in the southern part of Mason County. The lay-down area is the old Harbison Walker plant south of Ludington on old US-31. These things are HUGE if you have never seen them up close before.
