Great ads.

Do they work? Certainly. I have visited Michigan five times in the past three years - Detroit, Holland, Grand Rapids, Ann Arbor, and East Lansing.

And Kalamazoo will be the destination in a few weeks.
Not referring to their effectiveness to people from outside the State. I'm talking about the constant barrage of them to us here in West Michigan, about some pretty ridiculous "destinations." I heard one advertising Flint and Genessee County the other day, which didn't mention one thing we don't have here in Grand Rapids. County parks? Acres of woods? Where in Michigan can't you find that? Another about Mount Pleasant, same thing. A river? A vibrant downtown? Mt Pleasant? Seriously? Alpena, Michigan corn, yada yada. They're on every five minutes...

I wouldn't complain if it wasn't tax dollars going toward these. Just market them OUTSIDE OF MICHIGAN MEDC. Thanks.

Eastern Market is a gem because it is a combination of a surplus produce market AND a farmers market. Some cities have one or the other but RARELY both.

A surplus produce market is a market where the vendors purchase their fruits and vegetables from large wholesalers. In these markets, the produce is a bit older than what you find in a normal grocery store. However, in general, the produce is good if used in several days AND are a fraction of the costs you pay in a large supermarket.

A farmers' market is where you deal directly with the farmer/grower. At Eastern Market, you have access to HUNDREDS of farmers in season from 100 miles around Detroit - Saginaw to Ann Arbor to Leamington, ON. And a lot of these producers grow specialty items that you will NOT find in the local supermarkets.

In addition, in the market, you have access to any number of wholesalers who also sell retail as well as other specialty meat purveyors.

I strongly recommend some of the specialty markets like Rocky Peanuts, R Hirt (cheeses and international products), and Cost Plus wines.

There is NOTHING like this in Chicago and the West Side Market in Cleveland cannot compare.

The Eastern Market sounds wonderful, is it possible to clone a mini version and transport it my area in Michigan? Having grown up in a largish city on the east coast, my current location lacks......a lot.....

I have a friend who lives in Michigan and whenever she comes up with one of her hair-brained schemes, I just say, "that's pure Michigan!"
