I saw a funny sign on a store referring to our times here in Michigan which read " A penny saved is a government oversight".

Time for Michiganders to make their property "sovereign nations".

Dean Kamen, a wealthy inventor, did just that. I have talked to this individual when he visited West Michigan once and he mentioned that the state would not allow his electrical windmill on an island he bought (rich neighbors cryed about seeing a windmill on their ocean views and contacted their political buddies) so he declared his island an independant state. He had to buy an old ship (you have to have a navy), and did a few other things (constitution, flag, etc), and then the state couldn't touch him anymore...although the feds won't recognize the secession. If only the rest of us had the money to do so!

Deep down inside, i've personally wanted to do this. I've always joked about being a "terrorist state" so that my property could get bombed/destroyed by the military so the government can pay me millions to rebuild.

Here's my question...please answer rationally: The state has a democratically controlled house and a republican-controlled senate, right? They have to give the governor the budget to sign (she's a democrat). Why, when she hasn't even seen their budget yet, is everyone blaming her for raising taxes? Doesn't any tax-increase come from the legislature (which is 1/2 democrat and 1/2 republican)?

Thanks!
First Grandmole wrote her "dream budget" and sent it to the house. The republicans didn't like the huge tax increase so they refused to vote for it. There is a democrat majority so they can pass it but they want a few repubs. to vote for it so a few "key" dems. can vote no. Plus the senate is repub. controlled so they can still kick it back, which there is no time for.

You are probably going to ask me next; What do you mean by "key dems."? Well there are a few dems., one is Robert Dean of GR, who won by a slim majority so if they can vote no on this bill it improves their chances of reelection next year when everyone is screaming about having less money. Dean (and a few of his other deceitful dem. cronies) can say: "Don't look at me I voted no".

They say they just want bipartisian support but thats a bunch of BS.

Well here's something I learned on Friday after I got my renewel for my trucks insurance I noticed that the monthly charge went from 91.07 per month to $117.82 and increase of $26.75 So I call Allstate and ask why the increase? Get this the State of Michigan just upped the Insurance fund or something I didn't understand, I just figure it was one of those hidden Taxes that Grandhole has been slipping in on Us. I hope all you folks are writing e mails to State Reps telling them Your concerns and how your going to come up with the extra Tax money. At this rate you'll have to work from Jan 1st til August 30th just to pay the Taxes. Boy that leaves you with only 4 months of pay to pay your Bills. I hope you make Big money in that four months. Unbelieveable BLOWN AWAY

The 4.35% income tax starts immediately. It's not retroactive. It was discussed.

The 2% service tax starts on December 1st.

The Republicans didn't have the numbers to push their proposals through.

That part of your auto insurance is called the MCCA (Michigan Catastrophic Claims Association). It's not part of the state and it's not a tax, but a non-profit. It helps pay for auto claims of more than $400,000 (health related), and covers all Michigan drivers. Some years it goes up, some years it goes down. If you've paid attention to it, some years it has dropped by $50 - $75 or more. It doesn't perpetually rise year over year.

You should really drop Allstate. They are one of the most expensive I've seen. Citizens is also going up, I think due to massive losses they have had in Florida hurricanes, so we dropped them recently after our homeowners insurance crept way up, and ended up saving about $400/year in combined auto/home insurance. I think the company we are with now is Westfield (?) We have an independent agency that can shop around for us.

Hope that helps!

Governor - Democrat
State House - Democrat-controlled
State Senate - Republican-controlled

Why did the Senate vote for this? To me (and again, I'm trying to stay completely rational and not resort to name-calling or mud-slinging) it seems like this was a bipartisan effort where both sides had to give-and-take.

I hate to pay taxes too. Don't get me wrong.

So we all need to seperate out our income for 2007 and pay a different rate post Oct 1st, 2007? What a mess...

Do you have a source online that states the income tax increase is not retro-active to income prior to Oct 1, 2007?

Thanks!

Michigan's fiscal year runs from Oct to Sep. It's located here: TREASURY - Treasury
