I'm thinking of retirement and looking into SW Michigan. I lived in Grand Rapids about 30 years ago and liked it.
My grandkids live in the burbs of Chicago like myself and I don't want to be too far away but have to get out of Illinois! :eek. I was looking into the Berrien County area, not as far north as St Joe/Benton Harbor. I'd like a neighborhood area (no middle of the cornfields, please!) something convenient to amenities like shopping, restaurants, etc. Price range for a home is tops 235K. I'd appreciate any feedback anyone has on this area!

The Holland and Saugatuck area -- especially in the historic downtown areas of each -- offer excellent choice at that price range. You'd be right in town with restaurants, pubs, coffee shops, shopping, galleries, and lots of theatre, arts and music options. And you'd be 30 minutes from all the night life, sports, arts and museums of Grand Rapids too. And Chicago is just a short Amtrak ride away on the Pere Marquette Line. Perfect!
