If GM starts to do as well as people think, then it will be business as usual in MI with no major reforms. Then in 10-15 years, we will get all the chicken little predictions again. It's starting to get a bit old.
???? So we are going to hopefully set the Michigan economy up on the future of GM...novel idea,You must live in Lansing,or maybe just went to the same business school.

If we are gonna be realistic then we know that Michigan will not recover for decades.America lost in the manufacturing sector long time ago and there is no way that there gonna be jobs here like they used to be.Michigan would have rode this one out better, but did not have any service sector at all. There is no tourism and there never has been one like it is in Florida and other states. So what jobs do you assume there are in this state and there will be?Honestly not much in general labor jobs.construction or anything. It`s mostly restaurant jobs and somewhat healthcare, but i would not bet on it.I have got the house on sale and i am waiting to get it sold so i can move down south, west or east coast.I have regretted a lot the fact that i bought a home here back in 2003 when already knew how difficult it was in this state. It is not fair because rents haven`t gone lower in proportion with house values, but right now it`s pointless and silly to make any question as the situation has gotten out of hands. The only jobs that are left in this state are restaurant jobs and i am not sure for long these jobs will be there as well.Bottomline leave while you can and i am paying for this since i did not look into this much closely.Well everyone who stayed here paid the price and will continue if they stay longer. You can`t keep a family,a house and whatever with trashy jobs.

While I left last year to go to grad school, I'd probably like to be back someday.
Honestly. if Michigan could clean up some things(crime, low economic prospects), then the population will very well go back up again. Michigan does have some of its own beauty. Detroit in particular could rise again(and not just in the automobile industry either) provided there was some kind of plan. The first solution is make Michigan a place to do business(for anyone, big business and small). Why are the automobile companies setting up shop in places like Georgia, Alabama, and rural sections of Indiana and Ohio? University of Michigan is nearby Detroit, so if there are any software engineers, Microsoft should think about going to the Detroit metro area. And not just Detroit. There is also Flint, Grand Rapids, Lansing,Saginaw. All are cities that need to attract industries back to the region. They are also cities that need to clean up its politics and high crime rate. Kind of sad that high crime rates and high unemployment rates coincide, though not surprising.

You are wrong. It doesn't have to be like that. As much as I am scared to death to live in parts of Michigan, they don't have to stay like that. They can recover. What Michigan needs is a facelift on the economy and clean up its act. The crime needs to be curtailed significantly. Michigan should have policemen who care about the community rather than corruption. Michigan needs politicians who care about the community. No taxes for a year for a business that sets up shop in Michgan. Fairer taxes. Why have the businesses left?

Michigan doesn't need to set its economy up on GM's future(and especially Ford's future). That is why Michigan is in deep water now. Michigan needs more sectors of the economy.

The only crime in GR I ever hear about is gang related. Stay away from gangs and you will be ok. There have been a couple cop - murder/suicides this year but thats about it and those were in Allegan co..

Detroit has political problems but they don't affect the west side of the state too much. Lansing is another story.

In the 80's it was Texas,in the 90's it was Florida/Arizona,now it's sommewhere new.People have been leaving for years(MOST DIDN'T MOVE TO MICHIGAN UNTIL 30'S/40'S) .People have known for years that technology would change manufactoring, and has.Look up the Rust belt on Wiki, manufacturing grows by2%.Instead of educating themselves or children people blew all their money.Michigan creates 2 good paying jobs for every 3 lost.State officials didn't know Banks were screwing people over with loans not just in Michigan but everywhere,Bush would help Corp.move production to China, our military provides protection for goods being Shipped(if china owned 51% OF cOMPANY THAN OUR MILITARY IS PROTECTING GOODS FOR THE COMMUNIST CHINESE GOVERNMENT),Oil company don't compete with each other so foreign and domestic companies price fix (THEY PRODUCE LESS OIL ON PURPOSE SO THEY CAN CHARGE MORE AND HURT OTHER INDUSTRIES LIKE SHIPPING,RESTARAUNTS,RETAIL STORES,ETC),Bush has also stopped new industries from changeing our energy needs(HE AND HIS FAMILY ARE OIL BARRENS),Iraq war is costing Billions,(CHINESE WORKERS COST LESS BUT YOU ALSO NEED LIKE 20 TO DO THE SAME WORK AS 1 AMERICAN COMBINE WITH SHIPPING COSTS AND POOR QUALITY OF PRODUCTS IF CHINA HAD TO PUT THEIR CURENNCY ON WORLD MARKET THEIR WORKERS WOULD MAKE MORE, THAN AMERICAN PRODUCTS WHICH ARE BETTER MADE WOULD BE CHEAPER),why don't they well they don't want to lose their domence and we don't force thEm because(THAT WAR IN IRAQ IS BEING PAYED FOR BY CHINA NOT AMERICAN WHICH WE GET TO PAY INTEREST ON) WHO BENFITS FROM IRAQ RICH AMERICANS.THEY USE OUR MILITARY OUR MONEY AT NO COST TO THEM FOR PROFITS GOING ONLY TO CORPORATIONS.NAFTA WOULD HAVE WORKED IF WE NEVER HAD IRAQ WAR.CHINA WOULD HAVE TO PLAY FAIR AND AMERICANS,MEXICANS,AND OTHERS WOULD STILL HAVE JOBS.WE WOULD BE MAKING HUGE PROFITS OF CHINA.mANUFACTORING JOBS DEPLETING HAVE BEEN KNOWN TO PEOPLE IN MICHIGAN SINCE THE 70'S,OUR PRESIDENT HELPED IT.CONGRESS IS TO BLAME FOR LETTING HIM DO WHATEVER HE WANTS.AS FOR OUR STATE IT'S THE SAME STATE CONGRESS MAKES THE LAWS,APPROVES THE BUDGET,AND RAISES TAXES.DON'T BLAME GOVERNOR FOR OUR WEAK CONGRESSES BOTH FOR OUR STATE AND FEDERAL GOVERNMENT.WE ALL KNEW WE WERE GOING TO LOSE MANUFACTORING JOBS FOR EACH GENERATION BUT BUSH HELPED LOSE MORE ,ADD REAL ESTATE,AND OIL PRICES AND EVERYTHING ELSE.NO GOVERNOR CAN CHANGE THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT.YOU CAN LOWER TAXES THEN KIDS STOP GOING TO COLLEGE ,PARKS GET LESS MONET TO MAINTAIN THEMSELVES,PEOPLE GET SMALLER UNEMPLOYMENT CHECKS,ETC.BUT WILL THAT EXTRA 200$ from state solve the real problem people are facing everywhere in america. Our Federal government has gone corporate and we need to start demanding our Congress to help Americans and use our money for ourselves, giving money to 3rd world countries is great but don't make us one in doing so.We need our money and military to build better roads and infrastucture here.
